VB: Panthers celebrate Senior Day with sweep of VTSU Castleton

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Sydney Riley (Haverhill, Mass.) and freshman Sya McKay (Somersworth, N.H.) combined for 17 kills and 10 blocks as Plymouth State University blanked Vermont State University Castleton, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21), in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's volleyball match on Senior Day at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead in the opening set en route to a comfortable win, then rode a six-point service run from senior Veronika Castro Rodriguez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) in set two to build a 2-0 advantage.

Castleton opened the third set with a seven-point lead, but Plymouth State battled back to pull even before scoring the final four points – including two blocks from Riley – to break a 21-21 tie and complete the sweep.

Riley finished with nine kills (.389) and four blocks, while McKay added eight kills (.348) and six blocks.

Prior to the match, Plymouth State honored Castro Rodriguez and graduate student Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) with a brief on-court ceremony as part of the team's Senior Day festivities.

Plymouth State improves to 13-5 (3-1 LEC), while the Spartans fall to 9-10 (0-3 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Castleton 0
    • Plymouth State (13-5, 3-1 LEC)
    • Castleton (9-10, 0-3 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • The Panthers used an early 5-1 spurt to take a 6-2 lead in the first set. Sophomore Danielle Emerson (Biddeford, Maine) served a long run of points, sparked by a Fiona Bailey (Wrentham, Mass.) kill, to extend the margin to 16-7 and before Bailey's late strike sealed a 25-14 win.
  • In set two, Castro Rodriguez served six straight points, with Riley pounding a pair of kills as PSU surged ahead, 14-5. Castleton trimmed the margin to seven, but Koelb and Riley notched consecutive kills, and freshman Emily Sousa (Farmington, Conn.) added an ace to push the lead to double-digits, 21-11. PSU coasted from there, winning 25-17.
  • The Spartans raced out to a 10-3 lead in the third, but Plymouth State roared back to tie it at 17-17. A McKay block gave the Panthers their first lead, though Castleton briefly regained control winning a lengthy rally to go ahead, 21-20. A Koelb kill evened the score, and a Spartan error and big block from Riley and junior Annalyn Cahill (Mystic, Conn.) made it 23-21. Bailey and Riley combined for another block to close out the comeback, 25-21.
By the Numbers:
  • Riley tied for the match high with nine kills, hitting .389 with four blocks.
