WBB: RIC squeezes past Panthers in fourth quarter

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's basketball team was defeated by the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen, 56-47, in a Little East Conference (LEC) clash at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
 
The teams were tied at 41-41 with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter, the RIC's defense buckled down to limit the Panthers to just six points the rest of the way.
 
Sophomore Ashley Stephens (Pembroke, N.H.) led the Panthers with 15 points, while junior Raegan Peck (Dudley, Mass.) tallied nine points of her own. Juniors Elli Cox (Deerfield, N.H.) and Hailey Malozzi (Maynard, Mass.) were a force on the boards, bringing down ten and eight rebounds, respectively, in the losing effort for the Panthers.
 
Plymouth State drops to 3-17 (0-12 LEC), while RIC improves to 16-6 (11-2 LEC).

Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • The Panthers opened with an 8-3 lead with 7:10 to go in the first quarter.
  • RIC responded with 13 unanswered points to take a 16-8 advantage with 3:57 on the clock in the first.
  • After scoring the final three points of the first quarter, the Panthers trailed 18-12 after ten minutes of play.
  • Plymouth State got to within two points (20-18) with 6:56 to go until halftime.
  • The Anchorwomen kept PSU at arm's length, registering a 9-0 run in the second quarter to extend the margin to 11 points (29-18) with less than three minutes to play.
  • PSU closed the gap again, finishing out the second quarter on a 9-4 run to make it a 33-27 game heading into the locker room.
  • The Panthers continued to push forward, starting the third quarter on an 8-2 run to tie things up at 35-35 with 6:12 to go.
  • Plymouth State took its first lead since the opening minutes of play, 40-39, with 2:13 on the clock in the third quarter.
  • Free throws for both teams closed out the third quarter of play, as the Anchorwomen sank two shots from the charity stripe with no time on the clock to lead 44-41 with one quarter left to play.
  • Play seemed to come to a halt, as both teams struggled to hit shots to open the final quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter the Panthers trailed 46-44.
  • The Anchorwomen hit the next bucket, a jumper from the right side of the key, to make it a two-possession game (48-44) with 3:39 left in regulation.
  • The Anchorwomen pulled away down the stretch to secure the conference win.
By the Numbers:
  • Each team shot 33.3% from the floor and the teams combined 7-for-43 from distance.
  • Each team brought down 37 rebounds. The Anchorwomen edged PSU on the offensive glass by a margin of 14-11.
  • The Panthers moved the ball well, recording 11 assists on their 16 field goals.
  • Bench points went to RIC, 14-8.
  • The Anchorwomen took control of the paint, scoring 26 points to 12 for Plymouth State.
  • RIC, which has won 15 straight against the Panthers, has made a recent surge in the LEC. Plymouth State had led the head-to-head battle 34-33 before this recent run.
  • PSU has a 22-18 record at home against the Anchorwomen dating back to the 1987-88 season.
