PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Four members of the Plymouth State University softball program were honored by College Sports Communicators for their academic excellence on Tuesday, as the CSC Academic All-District Teams were announced.
Seniors
Caroline Macri (Burlington, Mass.),
Kaity Montelongo (South Paris, Maine), and
Jade Guertin (Oakland, R.I.), and junior
Emily Bessette (Cranston, R.I.) were recognized for their outstanding academic accomplishments.
Academic All-District honorees are considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America ballot, where First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in mid-June.
To be eligible for Academic All-District recognition, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically and must maintain at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average. Graduate students must maintain the minimum GPA as both undergrad and graduate students. Additionally, student-athletes must appear in 90% of the team's games, or start 66% of the team's games. Pitchers need a minimum of 17 appearances of 35 innings pitched.
Under four-year head coach
Mike Bernier, the Panthers finished the season with a 28-16 record (9-7 LEC) and advanced through the winner's bracket of LEC Tournament to compete for the league title for just the third time in program history. Plymouth State recorded the second-most wins in a single season in program history – just two shy of the program record – representing a remarkable 12-win improvement from last spring despite being picked eighth in the LEC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
