WTEN: Corrigan gets first win, but Panthers tripped up at Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – Sophomore Lauryn Corrigan (Littleton, N.H.) secured her first collegiate win, but Salem State University got past Plymouth State University, 5-1, in Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis action at the Central Campus Tennis Courts on Saturday.

Corrigan faced a steep challenge at No. 3 singles, edging out her opponent, 7-6, in the opening set, only to fall by the same score in set two. Corrigan buckled down in the 10-point tiebreak, grabbing her first career win by a 10-6 score to account for PSU's lone point.

Plymouth State slips to 0-3 (0-1 LEC), while the Vikings win their season opener (1-0, 1-0 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, Salem State 5
    • Plymouth State (0-3, 0-1 LEC)
    • Salem State (1-0, 1-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • The Vikings swept doubles play, though Corrigan and freshman Sidney Huff (Port Orchard, Wash.) picked up three games at No. 2.
  • Sophomore Sarah Lamy (Hooksett, N.H.) paired up with junior Anyah Fields (San Diego, Calif.) at No. 3 doubles, but the twosome came up short by a 6-2 score.
  • Corrigan got the Panthers on the board with her marathon battle at No. 3 singles.
  • Junior Sofia Orama (Marlborough, Conn.) was also locked in a tight battle at No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Orama rebounded for a 6-4 win in set two, but her opponent eked out a 10-8 victory in the third-set tiebreak to hold on for the win.
  • Junior Chloe Ahern (Middleton, Mass.) fell at No. 1 singles (3-6, 4-6), while Huff put up a fight at No. 5 (1-6, 5-7).
  • Lamy nearly pulled out a first set win, before falling in straight sets (4-6, 0-6) at No. 4 singles.
By the Numbers:
  • Corrigan's victory was the first of her career.
  • The Vikings snapped a 15-match losing streak in the head-to-head series.
  • The Panthers knocked off Salem State in the first round of the LEC Tournament last year.
