WB: Early push not enough as Panthers fall at Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Plymouth State University women's basketball team fell to Rhode Island College, 76-31, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball game at The Murray Center on Saturday.
 
The Anchorwomen led wire to wire, using multiple scoring runs to extend the margin throughout the second half. Plymouth State trailed by just three late in the opening quarter, but RIC used a 9-0 spurt to jump out to a 20-8 lead after one and the Panthers were unable to get within single digits the rest of the way.
 
Junior Ashley Stephens (Pembroke, N.H.) and senior Elli Cox (Deerfield, N.H.) shared the team lead with six points apiece – with Cox also chipping in team highs of six rebounds and three steals.
 
Plymouth State falls to 8-9 (1-8 LEC), while Rhode Island College improves to 13-5 (7-2 LEC).

Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • Both teams started slowly, with the Anchorwomen nursing a 9-3 lead at the first quarter media timeout.
  • Senior Hailey Malozzi (Maynard, Mass.) got to the rim, then hit a three-pointer on the following possession to get within 11-8 with just over two minutes left in the first.
  • The hosts closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 20-8 lead into the second.
  • RIC continued the surge early in the second, extending to 29-11.
  • Plymouth State clawed back in the final two minutes of the frame, using a 9-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 31-20 at halftime.
  • PSU stayed withing striking distance over the first few minutes of the third, but RIC used a 15-1 surge to grow the lead to 53-28 by the end of the quarter and the Panthers were unable to rally in the fourth.
By the Numbers:
  • RIC shot nearly 50% from the field (29-for-63), while limiting the Panthers to 9-of-47.
  • Plymouth State blocked three shots in the contest.
  • Cox had three of the team's seven steals.
