WH: VTSU Castleton rallies past Panthers in OT

CASTLETON, Vt. – Junior Grace Bonnell (Madison, Wis.) and senior Morgan Cunningham (Wrentham, Mass.) scored special-teams goals to give Plymouth State University a 2-0 lead, but Vermont State University Castleton responded with three unanswered goals to rally past the Panthers, 3-2, in overtime, to open a Little East Conference (LEC) women's ice hockey weekend series at Spartan Arena on Friday afternoon.

Bonnell stuffed home a loose puck during a power play late in the first period, and Cunningham potted a short-handed breakaway goal midway through the second to stake the Panthers to a two-goal advantage.

Castleton struck twice in a five-minute span to tie the game in the third period, then secured the extra point halfway through the overtime session.

Plymouth State moves to 8-10-0 (2-9-0 LEC), while the Spartans go to 10-10-0 (6-7-0 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 2, VTSU Castleton 3 (OT)
    • Plymouth State (8-10-0, 2-9-0 LEC)
    • VTSU Castleton (10-10-0, 6-7-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State snagged a first-period lead with a power-play strike at 14:38 of the opening frame when junior Lilli Warnock (Bernardsville, N.J.) whipped a shot from the left circle. Senior Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) pushed the rebound through the goalie's pads and Bonnell knocked the puck over the line for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Panthers ramped up the pressure in the second period, outshooting the hosts by a 17-9 margin. PSU doubled its lead midway through the frame when freshman Claire Deis (Calgary, Alberta) collected the puck behind the PSU goal and fired it off the half wall during a penalty kill. Cunningham won the race to the loose puck in the neutral zone and skated down the left side for a 2-on-0 break, lifting a shot into the top-left corner to make it 2-0.
  • Castleton cut the margin to 2-1 with a low-angle shot just 1:18 into the third period.
  • The Spartans pulled even just over five minutes later by converting on a 2-on-1 break.
  • The hosts extended the pressure, but junior Teagan Wilson (Salisbury, Mass.) made 14 saves over the final stages of regulation to force overtime.
  • Castleton secured the win at the midpoint of the extra session when a shot from the slot found the back of the net.
By the Numbers:
  • Porrello extended her program record for assists with her first-period helper.
  • Bonnell scored for the second straight game, while Cunningham has tallied two goals over the last three games.
  • Wilson finished with 33 saves. Two of her three 30-save performances this season have come against the Spartans.
  • Plymouth State went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Spartans were 1-for-5.
  • Castleton held a 36-32 edge in shots.

Up Next:
  • The teams return to Spartan Arena on Saturday (Jan. 31) for a 12:30 p.m. puck drop.
