PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of Plymouth State University men's soccer players earned Little East Conference (LEC) recognition as the league announced its weekly awards on Monday.
Junior
George Bergin (Brentwood, N.H.) was named LEC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman goalkeeper
Bryant Amaral (Coventry, R.I.) was selected as Rookie of the Week after helping the Panthers to a 1-0-1 record.
Bergin scored twice and added three assists as PSU earned a 4-4 draw with the University of New England on Wednesday before edging Eastern Connecticut State, 1-0, on the road Saturday. Bergin had a hand in all four goals against the Nor'easters, scoring twice and posting two assists. He also added an assist in the win at ECSU.
Amaral posted his second straight conference clean sheet, making four saves against the Warriors. He made an early save, then alertly grabbed a ball that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced off the goal line to keep it out of the net early in the second half. The victory marked Plymouth State's first road victory in the series since the 2006 season. He added four saves in the UNE match.
Plymouth State (5-4-1, 2-2-0 LEC) has already surpassed last year's win total and currently sits tied for third in the conference standings. The Panthers host Keene State in a key matchup Wednesday (Oct. 7) at 3 p.m.
