Ben Chipman was named interim head coach of the women's ice hockey program prior to the 2023-24 academic year and was endorsed as head coach over the summer. After doubling the teams win total in his first season, Chipman's squad set the program record for wins in a historic season last winter.
Â
Playing in the inaugural season of MASCAC women's ice hockey, the Panthers rolled to an 11-2-2 conference mark to capture the program's first regular season crown. Chipman guided PSU to the championship game of the MASCAC Tournament, where the Panthers outlasted Rivier, 2-1, to win the title. The game-winning goal came 6:55 into the fourth overtime, making it the second-longest D-III game in women's hockey history, and just 71 seconds shy of tying the record for longest game.
Â
Sparked by spectacular net-play by goalkeeper Karlee Lehner '27, PSU set a school record with seven shutouts. The team added records for goals, power play goals, assists, points, goals against average and save percentage, while Katie Porrello '26 set marks for points and assists in a season.
Â
PSU needed at least a tie at Worcester State in the regular season finale to capture the top seed for the MASCAC Tournament, while the Lancers would claim the #1 seed with a regulation win. PSU dominated play, outshooting the hosts by a 43-25 margin, but stingy goalkeeping on both sides resulted in a 1-1 tie. The two teams finished tied atop the league with 34 points apiece, but PSU's 2-0-1 record in the head-to-head matchup gave the Panthers the top seed for the tournament.
Â
A three-year captain on the men's team, Chipman picked up his first career win in his second career game as Lauren McNeil ’24 '25G scored the game winner in the final minutes of regulation for a 3-2 win over UMass Boston. The team followed with wins in two of its next three conference games, marking the best start to NEHC play. Chipman guided the team to an important 5-2 victory over Salem State in early February to help cement a spot in the NEHC Tournament as the seventh seed.
Â
Laura Castronova ’27 scored a first-period goal against second-seeded Elmira, the team’s first tally against the powerhouse program in six all-time meetings, and Chipman’s squad maintained the 1-0 edge into the first intermission, before the Soaring Eagles rallied for the win.
Â
As a player, Chipman helped lift the Panthers to four straight MASCAC titles and NCAA Tournament appearances from 2018-23, including just the second home game in the program's history in March 2023.
Â
Chipman has been a significant presence in the community during his time at Plymouth State. In addition to his success on the ice, he was involved with several campus organizations including the Student Business Advisory Council, Business School Corporate Sponsor Speaker, International Orientation Leader, and International Business Club. A four-time MASCAC Fall/Winter and Winter/Spring All-Academic Team member, he achieved President's List honors with a perfect GPA every semester.
Â
Chipman's coaching experience includes five years with Plymouth State Youth Hockey, as well as time with British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) players at the STIX Collegiate Cup Showcase. He also spent two seasons coaching for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities for Children in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
