PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Michelle Gosselin
(Underhill Center, Vt.) scored a game-high 20 points and sophomore
Danielle Jenkins (Marlborough, Mass.) and junior Lauren Wholley
(Danvers, Mass.) each recorded double-doubles Tuesday evening as
Salem State College defeated Plymouth State University, 65-33, in
non-conference women's basketball at Foley Gymnasium.
The victory also marked career win #600 for Salem State's 27th-year
head coach Tim Shea, just the fourth coach in NCAA Division III
women's basketball history to reach the milestone. Coach Shea
now has a career mark of 600-143.
Freshman Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West)
continued her strong play for the Panthers, scoring a team-high 13
points and grabbing six rebounds. Senior Lauren
Daniels (Concord, N.H.) pulled down 11 boards for the
Panthers but scored just two points.
Gosselin was on fire from the outside for the visitors, hitting six
three-pointers in 10 attempts, including 5-of-7 in the first
half. Jenkins finished with 10 points and 10 boards, while
Wholley contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Plymouth State kept the game close much of the first half, as the
Vikings led by just six points (24-18) with four minutes to play.
An 11-2 run to close out the half gave Salem State a 35-20
advantage at the break.
Salem State pulled away quickly to start the second half,
outscoring the Panthers 14-2 to take a 27-point advantage.
PSU had no luck all night trying to stay in the game with
three-point shots, converting just one of 22 attempts from beyond
the arc, 0-for-10 in the second half.
PSU, 3-2, opens Little East Conference play Saturday at Foley
Gymnasium against Eastern Connecticut (1:00 p.m.). Salem
State, 4-0, looks to remain unbeaten Saturday at home against Clark
University (1:00 p.m.)
