PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Meg
MacDonald (Salem, N.H.) scored a season-high 18 points,
including eight points in the final minute and a half, to lead
Plymouth State University to an 87-79 victory over the University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday afternoon in a Little East
Conference women's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers overcame an eight-point second-half deficit to pull
out the win. PSU evens its overall record at 7-7 and ups its
LEC mark to 2-3, while UMD falls to 3-12 and 0-5.
MacDonald was one of five Panthers to score in double
figures. Senior Lauren Daniels (Concord,
N.H.) and freshman Amanda Kania (Manchester,
N.H./West) tossed in 13 points apiece, sophomore Karly
Gray (Southampton, Mass.) added 12 points, and sophomore
Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) chipped in with 10.
Junior Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, Mass.) led all players with
21 points and seven rebounds for UMass Dartmouth, connecting on
5-of-7 shots from three-point range. Senior Lisa Satkevich
(Quincy, Mass.) made all five of her shot attempts and finished
with 14 points, and freshman Tara Driscoll (Swampscott, Mass.)
added 12 points for the Corsairs.
It was a tight game throughout the first half, with seven lead
changes and neither team leading by more than six points. The
final lead change came in the closing seconds of the half when PSU
converted a lay-up for a 36-34 advantage at the break.
UMD opened the second half with a 22-12 surge, taking its largest
lead of the day at 56-48 with 11 minutes remaining. PSU answered
with a 13-3 run over the next four minutes to regain the lead, but
Andruszkiewicz hit a three-point field goal to tie the game at
67-all with four minutes to play.
The Panthers pulled away from that point, going up by eight points
(81-73) on an old-fashioned three-point play by Gray in the final
minute, and MacDonald sank six straight free throws down the
stretch to seal the win for the Panthers.
PSU shot just 39 percent for the game but stayed in it on the
strength of a 46-35 rebounding advantage.
Both teams are back in action Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. with LEC
contests, PSU visiting rival Keene State and UMD traveling to Rhode
Island College.
