CASTLETON, Vt. - Junior Laura
Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) scored 15 of her game-high 19
points in the second half Tuesday evening to lead Plymouth State
University to a 60-44 victory over Castleton State College in a
non-conference women's basketball game at Castleton's new Glenbrook
Gymnasium.
The Panthers collect their fourth victory in as many tries to start
the season, marking the best start to a campaign since the 2001-02
team opened with a 7-0 record. Castleton is now 3-2.
Kent recorded the majority of her 19 points from the free throw
line as she converted 13-of-13 attempts. Plymouth State also
got 17 points from sophomore Amanda Kania
(Manchester, N.H./West) on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor, and 15
points from freshman Alicia Doucet (Manchester,
N.H./Central). Junior guard Kalie
Judd (Peabody, Mass.) contributed six assists and
a team-high seven rebounds but came up empty in the scoring column.
Junior Laura Cary (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) and senior Jess Banks
(Milford, Conn.) paced the Spartans effort, Cary with 13 points and
Banks with 12.
Castleton jumped out to a 13-4 lead over the first 6:30 of play.
Plymouth State trailed 15-8
with 10:28 remaining, before going on a 23-4 run over the next 7:40
to take a 31-19 lead. Doucet and Kania keyed the Panther run off
the bench, combining for 16 points, including 4-for-4 from
beyond
the arc. Banks scored the final seven points of the half to help
Castleton close to within 31-26 at halftime.
The second half belonged to Kent and the Panther defense, as
Plymouth State was able to hold the Spartans to just 18 second half
points on 7-for-24 shooting. PSU pulled away to a double-digit lead
in the first four minutes, 37-27, and led by 17 points (48-31) at
the midway point before coasting home with the win.
Both teams return to action next Tuesday, Dec. 2, with home games
against non-conference in-state rivals, as Castleton hosts
Middlebury and PSU entertains Colby-Sawyer in the home opener at
Foley Gymnasium (6:00 p.m.)
