WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Eastern Connecticut State
University women's basketball team held Plymouth State University
to one point over a stretch of 11 minutes in the first half
Saturday afternoon on the way to a 65-45 win in the Little East
Conference opener for both teams at Geissler Gymnasium.
Eastern seniors Christina Amato (Marlboro, Mass.)
and Nicky Morey (Columbia, Conn.) and sophomore
Jessica Moriarty (East Haven, Conn.) combined for
45 points, 15 rebounds, 14 steals, and nine assists. Morey led all
players in the game with 19 points to move to within 17 of 1,000 in
her career. She also had six assists and five rebounds; Moriarty
had her fourth double-figure scoring game this year with 18 points
and four steals, and Amato had a career-high eight steals to go
along with eight points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Senior post player Ashley McFetridge (Canton), who
scored her 1,000th career point Thursday, had nine
points and matched Amato with seven rebounds.
Plymouth State, which has lost its last two after winning its first
four, was held to less than 30 percent shooting from the floor.
Sophomore Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) and
juniors Laura Kent (Bellingham,
Mass.) and Katie Sunderland
(Londonderry, N.H.) combined for 31 of their team's points. Kania
had 11 points (5-for-9 from the floor) and five rebounds, Kent 10
points (8-for-10 from the stripe) and five rebounds and Sunderland
10 points (4-for-6 from the floor).
Trailing by a point in the opening minutes of the game, Eastern
held Plymouth State scoreless from the floor over a stretch of 11
minutes to build a 27-12 lead with 3:31 left in the half.
The Panthers missed 12 shots from the floor in that
span as the Warriors posted their 12th straight win over
PSU.
Plymouth State, 4-2 overall, is back on the court Tuesday with a
non-conference game at Lasell (8:00 p.m.) Eastern, 4-1, hosts
Mount Holyoke College Thursday at 7 p.m.
