NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Plymouth State University
outscored the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 23-8 over the
final five minutes Saturday afternoon and went on to defeat the
Corsairs, 85-78, in a Little East Conference women's basketball
game at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The Panthers rallied from a 15-point deficit over the final 10
minutes of the game to pull out the win. PSU, now 11-14
overall and 4-10 in conference play, earned the season sweep over
the Corsairs and finished in sixth place in the LEC, while UMD,
6-19 and 2-12, ended up in eighth place. The 11 wins for PSU
is the most in a season since the 2002-03 Panthers finished at
23-8.
PSU will be the sixth seed in next week's Little East Tournament,
and will travel to third-seeded Western Connecticut (19-5 overall,
11-3 LEC) for Tuesday's first-round match-up (7:00 p.m.).
Eighth-seeded UMD will visit top-seeded and regular season champion
University of Southern Maine.
The Panthers had five players score in double digits.
Sophomore Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) poured in
a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds, freshman Amanda
Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) finished with 17 points off
the bench, and junior Kayla Morin (Pascoag, R.I.)
tossed in 16. Senior Meg MacDonald (Salem,
N.H.) chipped in with 14 points and sophomore Karly
Gray (Southampton, Mass.) added 12. Senior
Lauren Daniels (Concord, N.H.) reached double
figures in rebounds with 10 as PSU outrebounded the Corsairs 41-27
and shot a blistering 27 of 29 from the free throw line.
The Corsairs led 42-37 at the half and increased their lead to
66-51 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. PSU battled back
with 17 unanswered points, turning a 71-56 deficit into a 73-71
Panther lead, and the momentum carried PSU the rest of the way.
Senior Lindsay Marsh (Bristol, Conn.) and junior Vicki
Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, Mass.) led the Corsairs with 18 points
apiece, while senior Lisa Satkevich (Quincy, Mass.) chipped in with
10 points.
