DANBURY, Conn. - Junior
Sarah Bryant (Arrowsic, Maine) scored five
goals and sophomore Kalie Judd (Peabody,
Mass.) contributed three goals and three assists Friday evening as
Plymouth State University defeated Western Connecticut State
University, 12-10, in the Little East Conference women's lacrosse
opener for both schools at the WestConn Athletic Complex.
Bryant scored all five of her goals in the first half, helping the
Panthers to a 7-4 lead at the intermission. PSU scored the
first four goals of the second half and appeared to have control of
the game with an 11-4 advantage with 17:42 remaining.
WestConn battled back though, scoring six of the final seven goals
to pull to within two with 2:11 to play, but PSU gained control of
the ball and ran out the clock.
Also scoring for PSU (1-2) were sophomore Kerry
D'Ambroise (Lowell, Mass.) with two goals and two assists,
and sophomore Rhiannon Groff (Nashua, N.H./North)
and junior Ellen Parent (Hampton,
N.H./Winnacunnet) with one goal apiece. Judd also led the
team with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Junior Melissa Dark (Peterborough, N.H./ConVal)
and freshman Michaela Rice (Weirs Beach, N.H.)
picked up five ground balls each, and senior goalie Sarah
Beebe (Rumson, N.J.) was strong in the Panther net, making
18 saves.
Sophomore Kara Kruczkiewicz (Brookfield, Conn.)
led the Colonials (0-6) with four goals, all coming during the
second-half comeback. Senior Caitlin Everin
(Glastonbury, Conn.) contributed three goals, and senior
Ashley Caruso (Northport, N.Y.), sophomore
Jessica Majeski (Norwalk, Conn.), and junior
Lindsey Taylor (Brookfield, Conn.) chipped in with
one goal apiece.
PSU's next game, which was scheduled for this Sunday at Bowdoin
College, has been postponed due to illness which has hit the
Bowdoin team. No make-up date has been announced. The
Panthers will get back into action on Saturday, Apr. 5, with an LEC
match-up at defending champion Eastern Connecticut (12:00 p.m.)
