BABSON PARK, Mass. - The nationally-ranked Babson
College women's lacrosse team opened its 2008 season in impressive
fashion on Friday, as the Beavers scored 13 unanswered goals in the
first half en route to an 18-2 victory over visiting Plymouth State
University in a non-conference contest at MacDowell Field. The
Beavers, ranked 12th in the country by the IWLCA, are now 1-0 on
the year, while the Panthers open their season at 0-1.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) led all scorers
with five goals for Babson, while fellow sophomore Anna Collins
(Winchester, Mass.) added four goals and two assists for a
game-high six points. Senior tri-captain Anita Martignetti
(Winchester, Mass.) chipped in with two goals and two assists, and
junior Lindsay Bucci (Medford, Mass.) tossed in two goals and one
helper while joining Pettengill with a team-high four draw
controls. Junior Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass.) also had a solid
season debut, posting one goal, two assists, three ground balls,
and three caused turnovers. First-year Sarah Macary was brilliant
in her first collegiate game in net, stopping six of seven shots on
goal in just under 45 minutes of action. Fellow rookie Rebecca
Foley (New York City, N.Y.) played the final 15 minutes and made
one stop.
Sophomore Taylor Cambal (West Yarmouth, Mass.)
scored both goals for Plymouth State, with junior Sarah
Bryant (Arrowsic, Maine) assisting on the first. Senior
goalie Sarah Beebe (Rumson, N.J.) went the
distance in net for the Panthers, making seven saves.
Babson turned in a nearly impeccable first half, scoring 13
unanswered goals to take a commanding 13-0 lead into the break.
Collins recorded all six of her points in the opening stanza, while
Pettengill scored four of her five goals. The Beavers would go up
15-0 before Cambal netted Plymouth State's first goal with 24
minutes remaining in the second, but Bucci and Martignetti
responded with back-to-back scores to push Babson's lead to 17-1.
Cambal struck again with 14:08 left to play to make it 17-2, but
Babson senior tri-captain and Bethany Nardone (Duxbury, Mass.)
finished off the scoring with her second career goal after
switching from defense to attack with 11 minutes remaining.
The Beavers return to action with a road game at Bates on Sunday at
3:30 p.m. The Panthers' next contest will be on March 17, when they
take on Rowan at 11 a.m. in St. Petersburg, Florida.
