PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore
Steve Engel (South Windsor, Conn.) scored a pair
of goals 23 seconds apart late in the fourth quarter Thursday
afternoon to lift Plymouth State University to an 8-7
come-from-behind victory over New England College in a
non-conference men's lacrosse game at Panther Field. It was
PSU's first home game of the season after 13 games on the road.
It was a tight game the entire 60 minutes. NEC jumped out to
a 3-1 lead after one period, and it was a 4-3 Pilgrim advantage at
halftime. PSU scored in the opening seconds of the third
quarter to tie the game at 4-4, and it was 5-5 heading into the
fourth quarter.
The Pilgrims pulled ahead with six minutes remaining in the game on
a goal by senior Carlos Gutierrez (Guaynabo, P.R.), but senior
John Cogswell (Jefferson, Mass.) answered for the
Panthers a minute later to deadlock the score at 6-6. NEC
regained the lead again on a goal by senior Cory Love (Rochester,
N.Y.) with 4:44 remaining, but Engel tied it with his first of the
game with 3:22 on the clock, and added the eventual game-winner
with 2:59 to play.
Cogswell finished with a goal and two assists two lead the home
team. Engel and senior Tony Aguiar
(Northborough, Mass.) scored two goals apiece, and senior
Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.), sophomore
Brian Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) and freshman
Sam Waszekelewicz (Glastonbury,
Conn.) added one goal each.
Sophomore Matt Vozzolo (Somers, Conn.) led the Pilgrims with three
goals, Love added two, and senior Dillon Lantz (Woodstock, Vt.)
added a goal and two assists.
Plymouth State finished with a 46-30 advantage in shots.
Panther freshman Billy Morgan (Winchester, Mass.) made nine saves
to earn the win, while NEC freshman Nick Acquaviva (Syracuse, N.Y.)
finished with 18 saves.
PSU, 9-5 overall, wraps up the regular season Saturday on Senior
Day at Panther Field with a 2:00 p.m. non-conference encounter
against Wentworth. NEC, 4-10, concludes its regular season
Saturday with a Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Salve Regina
(1:00
p.m.)
