PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Eastern Connecticut State
University scored the first 18 points of the game Saturday
afternoon and never looked back, posting a 70-43 victory over
Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference women's
basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.
The Warriors won their fifth straight contest and 13th
in their last 14 outings, improving to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in LEC
games. PSU dropped its second in a row and fell to 12-5
overall and 3-4 in conference play. Eastern shares first
place in the LEC with Western Connecticut.
Senior Nicky Morey (Columbia, Conn.) finished as the game's leading
scorer, recording 17 points for Eastern to go along with five
assists and five steals. Classmate Christina Amato (Marlboro,
Mass.) contributed 12 points, four assists and four steals, and
sophomore Brittany Whiteley (Windsor Locks, Conn.) chipped in with
10 points off the Warrior bench.
Junior Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) was the only
Panther to reach double figures in scoring, finishing with 10
points and six rebounds. Senior Kayla Morin
(Pascoag, R.I.) was next-highest with nine points.
After falling behind to start the game, PSU pulled to within 13
points (20-7) with 12 minutes remaining in the first half, but
could get no closer and trailed by 18 points at halftime,
34-16. The Panthers shot just 18.5 percent in the opening 20
minutes while the Warriors converted at a 50 percent clip.
The teams were back and forth for the first five minutes of the
second half until Eastern rattled off 10 straight points to go up
by 28 with 12 minutes remaining, 52-24, and PSU didn't challenge
the rest of the way.
Both teams are back in action with LEC road games on Tuesday at
5:30 p.m., Plymouth State visiting Southern Maine and Eastern Conn.
traveling to Keene State.
