WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior goaltender Erik
Shields (Lebanon, Maine) stopped 34 of the 35 shots he saw
Tuesday evening to help Plymouth State University skate past
Worcester State College, 4-1, in the MASCAC opener for both teams
at Horgan Rink.
The Panthers
overcame an early deficit with four unanswered goals over the final
two periods as the team remained undefeated (3-0-0) on the season.
The Lancer s
led 1-0 after the first period on a power play score from junior
Billy O'Neil's (Strafford, PA) first goal of the young
season. This proved to be the lone goal for Worcester as
Shields, now 2-0, held the Lancers scoreless for the remainder of
the game.
The Panthers
answered with two goals in the second period. The first came
from sophomore Chris Zaremba (Colorado Springs,
Colo.) with the extra man advantage as he was helped out by
freshman Chad Wilhelm (Plymouth, Mass.). The
second, which proved to be the game winner, was registered from
junior Jake Curtin (Concord, N.H.). Plymouth State
put the Lancers away for good in the third period with goals from
freshman Richie Zobak (Evergreen Park, Ill.) and
senior Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.).
Plymouth State
finished with a 41-34 advantage in shots on goal. Shields
made 33 saves to earn the win while Worcester State senior Andrew
Evans (Cromwell, Conn.) recorded 37 saves.
PSU looks to
keep its unbeaten streak alive this Thursday at Salem State in
MASCAC action at 7 p.m. The Lancers, 1-3, take on
non-conference opponent Franklin Pierce Thursday at 7 p.m.
