MILTON, Mass. - Freshman Steven Mohler (Anaheim, Calif.)
scored the game-winning goal with 5:05 left in the third period
Thursday evening as Curry College pulled out a 4-3 victory over
Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference men's ice
hockey contest at Max Ulin Rink.
Mohler's goal came just a minute and 17 seconds after PSU had
battled back from two goals down to tie the game at 3-3. The
win keeps Curry in a tie for second place in the Northeast with a
10-1-1 league record, 14-4-2 overall, while the upset-minded
Panthers dropped to 8-10-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the Northeast.
Plymouth State took the lead at 8:14 of the first period when
freshman Chris Zaremba (Colorado Springs, Col.)
scored his 11th goal of the season. Four minutes later,
freshman Christopher Smith (Brighton, Mich.) and senior Jeffrey
Hazelwood (Dublin, Calif.) scored consecutive goals a minute and 15
seconds apart to give Curry a 2-1 after one period.
Curry freshman Ryan Barlock (Niles, Ill.) extended the score to 3-1
with a power play goal two minutes into the second period. Freshman
Justin Phenney (Cleveland, Ohio) got one back for
PSU at the 5:51 mark, and the Panthers hung to within a goal
through the end of the second period.
After each team came up empty on a third period power play
opportunity in the first 12 minutes of the third period, junior
Stephan Davis (Lafayette, Calif.) scored for PSU
to tie the game at 3-3 with 6:22 remaining, with an assist from
classmate Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.). The
deadlock didn't last long, as Mohler scored the eventual
game-winner with 5:05 on the clock.
Curry finished with a 45-28 advantage in shots on goal. PSU
freshman netminder Allen Schneider (Strongsville,
Ohio) finished with 41 saves, and Curry goalie Zach Cardella
(Spokane, Wash.) made 25 stops.
After playing four straight road games, PSU will be on home ice
this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. with a conference game at Waterville
Valley against Johnson & Wales University. Curry
continues a three-game home stand Tuesday against Westfield State.
