NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Freshman Brianna
Davis (Framingham, Mass.) recorded a seven-point game
Saturday afternoon, scoring five goals and assisting on two others
to lead the Plymouth State University women's lacrosse team to its
first victory of the season, an 18-14 decision over the University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the Little East Conference opener for
both schools at Cressy Field.
The 18-goal output was Plymouth State's highest in nearly two
years. Junior Taylor Cambal (West Yarmouth,
Mass.) and freshman Kayla Nielson (Gorham, Maine)
added to the Panther scoring parade with two goals and three
assists apiece, and freshman Nicole Grover
(Yarmouth, Maine) and sophomore Michaela Rice
(Weirs Beach, N.H.) contributed three goals each.
Sophomore Rachel Carlucci (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Gillian
Carey (Waltham, Mass.) paced the Corsair attack with four goals and
one assist apiece, while sophomore Samantha Wonson (Lowell, Mass.)
added three goals and junior Allison Trearchis (Tyngsboro, Mass.)
chipped in with a pair.
PSU never trailed in the contest, leading 4-1 at the 10-minute
mark, 8-4 at the 20-minute mark and 11-6 at halftime. The
Panthers used a team attack as the first six goals were all scored
by different players.
Plymouth State (1-4, 1-0 LEC) outscored the home team 5-2 in the
first 10 minutes of the second half to extend the score to 16-8,
PSU's largest lead of the day. The Corsairs (0-5, 0-1 LEC)
answered with four straight to cut the deficit to four goals, but
the teams traded two goals each in the final five minutes for the
18-14 final.
The Panthers play another LEC game next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at
The Holderness School (N.H.) against two-time defending champion
Eastern Connecticut State University. UMD continues a six-game home
stand Thursday against Worcester State (7:00 p.m.)
