PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University scored
the first seven goals of the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon,
turning a one-goal game into a runaway as the Panthers went on to
defeat Salem State College, 13-5, in a Little East Conference men's
lacrosse game at Panther Field.
The Panthers won for the fourth time in their last five outings,
evening their overall record at 4-4 and improving to 2-1 in the
LEC. Salem State dropped its third in a row and dipped to 3-6
overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Sophomore Andrew Eriksen (Beverly, Mass.) led the
Panthers with four points on a goal and three assists. Junior
Adam Rothbart (Portland, Maine) topped the team
with three goals, all coming in the fourth quarter, while junior
Brian Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) contributed
two goals and an assist. Giroux leads the team with 14 goals
on the season. Classmates Brett Zebrowski
(Bayville, N.Y.) and Tim Hadley (New London,
N.H./Kearsarge) chipped in with two goals each.
Senior Robert Mulroy (Swampscott, Mass.) was the high-scorer for
the Vikings with a goal and two assists. Junior Justin Jones
(Danvers, Mass.) scored twice for the visitors, and junior Jonathan
Falls (Seekonk, Mass.) and freshman Ryan Gendreau (Danvers, Mass.)
added one apiece. Junior Mike Carpenito (Leominster, Mass.)
collected a game-high eight ground balls.
It was a 1-1 game after one quarter, as Mulroy and Eriksen traded
goals late in the period. The Panthers rattled off four unanswered
goals in the second quarter, and Gendreau scored for the Vikings as
time was winding down to make it a 5-2 Panther lead at halftime.
Falls and Jones scored the only two goals of the third quarter to
pull the Vikings to within one goal, but PSU put the game away with
its second straight dominant fourth quarter. The Panthers
outscored Castleton 7-1 in Tuesday's fourth period to secure a 12-3
victory.
Sophomore Billy Morgan (Winchester, Mass.) turned
in another strong effort in the Panther goal, making 14 saves,
while Salem State sophomore Brendan Gill (Chelmsford, Mass.)
finished with 12 saves in the Vikings' cage.
PSU plays another key LEC contest Tuesday at the University of
Southern Maine (4:00 p.m.), while Salem State returns home to host
Western Connecticut in a Little East encounter at Alumni Field
(7:00 p.m.).
