PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Taylor
Cambal (West Yarmouth, Mass.) scored a career-high seven
goals and added an assist Tuesday afternoon as the Plymouth State
University women's lacrosse team won its second straight game, a
17-14 Little East Conference victory at Arold Field over the
University of Southern Maine.
Cambal, who tallied a career-best six goals in her last outing last
Saturday, scored five goals in the first half against the Huskies,
including one with one second left on the clock for a 12-8 PSU lead
at the break. Cambal added two more goals in the second half
and now leads the Panthers with 25 goals on the season.
Freshman Brianna Davis (Framingham, Mass.) chipped
in with four goals for the winners, while classmate Nicole
Grover (Yarmouth, Maine) added a pair. PSU is now in
second place in the LEC with a 3-1 league record, 3-7 overall.
The Huskies got six goals from junior Jessica Knight (Alfred,
Maine), three from sophomore Kelsey Rodrigue (Lewiston, Maine) and
two each from senior Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Maine) and
sophomore Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine). USM suffered its
third straight loss and dipped to 1-2 in the LEC, 4-6 overall.
The game was close nearly the entire way. The visitors held
leads of 3-1 and 5-3 in the first 12 minutes of the contest, and it
was tied 6-6 at the midway point of the first half. PSU
rattled off four unanswered goals to take the lead for good, and
maintained the four-goal bulge at the intermission.
PSU upped its lead to 14-8 with the first two goals of the second
half. The Panthers had their largest lead of the game midway
through the second half, 15-9, when the Huskies came alive and
scored five unanswered goals to cut the deficit to 15-14 with five
minutes remaining.
The Huskies comeback bid fell short when PSU scored the final two
goals of the game for the three-goal victory.
PSU dominated the draws, winning 27 of the 32, and had a 40-31
advantage in shots. The Huskies had more ground balls by a
26-19 count.
The Panthers host Western Connecticut State University this
Saturday in a Little East match-up on Senior Day at Arold Field
(1:00 p.m.) USM returns home to host Eastern Connecticut
Saturday at 12 noon.
