PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Amanda
Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) scored a game-high 16 points
Thursday evening to lead Plymouth State University to a 70-47
victory over Johnson State College in a non-conference women's
basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers scored the first 16 points of the game and never
looked back, rolling to their second straight victory. PSU
improves to 12-3 on the season while the Badgers suffered their
sixth consecutive setback and dip to 2-9 overall.
Kania made 6-of-10 field goal attempts and all four free throws to
finish with 16 points in just 24 minutes of action. Four
other Panthers finished with seven points apiece -- senior
Kalie Judd (Peabody, Mass.), sophomore
Alicia Doucet (Manchester, N.H./Central) and
freshmen Meghan Sweeney (Litchfield,
N.H./Campbell) and Colleen O'Hara (Otego,
N.Y.) All 11 Panthers in uniform played at least 12 minutes
in the game and all but one scored at least four points.
Sophomore Andrea Deuell (Milton, Vt.) led the visitors with 14
points, converting 6-of-9 field goal attempts. Junior
Christine Tatro (Eden, Vt.) chipped in with nine points and senior
Claudia Martineau (Washington, Vt.) added eight; while freshman Jen
Ferrari (Westfield, Mass.) collected a game-high eight rebounds.
PSU took the 16-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest,
getting six points apiece from Kania and Doucet. The Panthers
maintained the double digit margin throughout the first half,
getting the lead up to 20 points (27-7) with eight minutes to play
and allowing extra playing time for the PSU reserves.
Johnson State came to life in the second half and outscored the
Panthers after the intermission, 34-29. The Badgers shots 52
percent from the field and 86 percent from the free throw line in
the second half after making just 13 percent from the floor and 46
percent from the line in the opening frame.
Both teams return to the court with home games on Saturday, PSU
hosting Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference affair
(1:00 p.m.) and JSC entertaining SUNY Canton in a non-conference
tilt at 2:00 p.m.
