BEDFORD, Mass. - Sophomore Bryan Kriner
(Newport, R.I.) scored his 12th goal of the season 3:55 into
overtime Thursday evening to give visiting Plymouth State
University a 6-5 victory over the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth in a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference
men's ice hockey game at Hetland Ice Arena.
Freshman
Richie Zobak's (Evergreen Park, Ill.) shot
from the point went through traffic in front and was deflected
by Kriner past UMass Dartmouth senior goaltender Jon
Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, Mass.) to give PSU the victory. The
Panthers won their third straight game to improve to 9-6-0 overall
and 6-3-0 in MASCAC games, while UMD dropped its fourth in a row
and fell to 5-9-1 overall and 1-7-1 in conference play.
Each team had
scored twice in the third period, which started with a 3-3
deadlock. Junior Jason Stahl (Londonderry, N.H.) gave UMD a 4-3
lead when he deflected home a shot by classmate Mickey Dudley
(Douglas, Mass.) for a power play goal at 7:55. Sophomore
Jake Curtin (Concord, N.H.) tied the score for PSU
when he one-timed a shot from the face-off circle for a power play
goal. Senior Aaron Blades (Chino, Calif.) put UMD back ahead when
he flipped a rebound off the glass past PSU senior goaltender
Aaron Runner (Alpharetta, Ga.) at 12:10, but
senior Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.) tied it at
5-5 with a power play goal at 15:50.
The Panthers
had taken an early lead when freshman Alex Cottle
(West Chester, Pa.) banged home a rebound at 5:14 of the first
period. PSU increased its lead when freshman Tim
Visich (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) fired home a one-timer from
the right face-off circle at 11:10.
The Corsairs
came back to tie the score at 2-2 on a pair of goals by sophomore
Rob Dudley (Douglas, Mass.) A power play goal by Zobak with 23
seconds remaining in the first period gave PSU a 3-2 advantage
heading into the second period.
Only one goal was scored in the middle frame, as freshman Phil
Bronner (Wilbraham, Mass.) tied the score with his first goal of
the season at 12:35.
UMD out shot
Plymouth State, 39-27. Dryjowicz-Burek made 21 saves for the
Corsairs, while Runner made 34 for the Panthers.
Both teams play
again on Saturday, UMD hosting Worcester State for a MASCAC
encounter and PSU traveling to Franklin Pierce University for a
non-conference match-up.
