NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's basketball team outscored
visiting Plymouth State University 10-4 down the stretch Saturday
afternoon and held on for an 80-70 victory in the first game of a
Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The Corsairs, who led 70-66 with two minutes to go, got a pair of
free throws from junior Lynley DeAmato (Melrose, Mass.) to take a
six-point lead. After senior Laura Kent
(Bellingham, Mass.) replied in kind for PSU, senior Kaylin Nelson
(New Bedford, Mass.) and Kent traded lay-ups to make it 74-70, UMD,
with 1:07 remaining. With PSU forced to foul, sophomore
Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, Mass.) connected on a pair of free
throws and DeAmato added four more to seal the verdict.
DeAmato had 20 points to lead a balanced attack that saw five
Corsairs in double figures. Her line included 14 successful free
throws without a miss. Junior Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, Mass.)
added 17 points, Houtman contributed 13, Nelson had 12 and freshman
Colleen Moriarty (Canton, Mass.) added 10.
Four Panthers reached double figures in scoring, with senior
Kalie Judd (Peabody, Mass.) and junior
Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) each scoring
18 points, sophomore Alicia Doucet (Manchester,
N.H./Central) adding 14 and Kent 10.
The Corsairs made 46.4 percent of their shots, including 59.1
percent in the second half, while limiting Plymouth State to 32.8
percent.
Both teams play Little East games again Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., with
UMD (7-10 and 2-5 in the Little East) visiting Rhode Island College
and Plymouth State (13-5 and 3-4 in LEC play) hosting rical Keene
State.
