Box Score Foley leads Panthers with goal and
assist
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Sean
Foley (Weymouth, Mass.) scored a goal and an assist in the
third period Thursday evening as Plymouth State University skated
past Stonehill College, 3-2, in non-conference men's ice
hockey action at Hanaway Rink.
Foley broke a 1-1 tie with his first goal of the season eight
minutes into the third period, and he set up the eventual
game-winner by classmate JC Richardson (Fort
Collins, Colo.) four minutes later. Stonehill pulled to
within one goal with 1:21 remaining, but the Panthers held on for
the win, improving to 2-1-2 on the season. Stonehill suffered
its fourth straight loss and fell to 2-8.
The Skyhawks had a 12-6 advantage in shots in the opening frame but
PSU sophomore Richie Zobak (Evergreen Park, Ill.)
scored the only goal for Plymouth State, beating the goaltender on
the power play from a tough angle along the right goal line.
Stonehill answered with the only goal of the second period when
junior Matt Doherty (Milton, Mass.) broke in alone on a breakaway
and knocked home a rebound of his own shot. Similar to the
first period, PSU had the shot advantage in the second frame but
Stonehill had the only goal.
Foley gave the Panthers the lead for good with his first goal of
the season at the 8:22 mark of the third period, and Richardson
snapped a back-hander over the goalie's shoulder at 12:43 to
give PSU a two-goal advantage. Senior Angelo Todesca
(Westwood, Mass.) shot one in off the right goal post for Stonehill
with less than two minutes remaining, but PSU held on for the
win.
PSU sophomore Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) made
21 saves to earn the victory in goal, while Stonehill senior Derek
Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass.) finished with 23 saves as Plymouth
State won the shots-on-goal battle, 26-23.
PSU returns to Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference
(MASCAC) action on Saturday with a visit to Framingham State
University (7:30 p.m.). Stonehill is also back on the ice Saturday,
traveling to UMass Dartmouth for a non-conference game (4:30
p.m.)
