DANBURY, Conn. - Junior Heather Lee (Seymour,
Conn.) scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds
Saturday afternoon to lead the Western Connecticut State University
women's basketball team to a 68-46 victory over Little East
Conference rival Plymouth State University at Feldman Arena.
The Colonials improve to 18-3 overall and remain one game in front
of Eastern Connecticut to the top spot in the league at 9-1.
Plymouth State drops to 14-7 overall and 4-6 in the LEC.
Plymouth State raced out to a 4-0 lead on back-to-back lay ups from
Katie Sunderland (Londonderry, N.H.) in the
opening minutes. With 7:06 remaining in the first half, the
Panthers went up by three, 22-19 when Laura Kent
(Belingham, Mass.) hit the back end of two free throws. That would
be the last lead the visitors would hold. WestConn scored 10 of the
half's final 14 points and took a 29-26 lead into the locker room
following a pair of free throws by Lee with 1.8 seconds remaining.
The Colonials built their lead up to 12 points, 42-30, just 6:08
into the final stanza when Carly Murphy (Wolcott, Conn.) buried one
of two from the charity stripe. Although Plymouth State drew within
seven points on three different occasions before the midway point
of the half, it never really threatened over the final 9:54 as the
Colonials held a double-digit advantage.
Also scoring in double figures for WestConn were junior Karli Spera
(Waterford, Conn.) with 16 points, and junior Melissa Teel (Hamden,
Conn.) who scored 12 points to go with a game-high 19 rebounds. It
was Teels 17th double-double of the season and third time she
pulled down 19 or more caroms.
PSU was led by junior Amanda Kania (Manchester,
N.H./West) who had 17 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field.
Senior Kalie Judd (Peabody, Mass.) added 12
points in the loss.
Prior the start of the game, WestConn celebrated the career of
senior forward Katie Moffo (Southington, Conn.)
who is the only senior on the this year's team.
WestConn takes to the road on Tuesday when it faces Rhode Island
College in Providence, while the Panthers return home to host
University of Southern Maine, also on Tuesday, both games at 5:30
p.m.
