(Box Score)
CASTLETON, Vt. – Plymouth State University
jumped out to a 7-1 halftime lead and never looked back Saturday
afternoon in defeating Castleton State College, 11-4, in
non-conference men's lacrosse action at Spartan Stadium.
Junior Andrew Eriksen (Beverly, Mass.) scored
three goals and added one assist while senior Brian
Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) added two goals and three
assists to lead the Panthers (1-2) to their first win of the
season. Seniors Steve Engel (South Windsor, Conn.)
and Matt Johansmeyer (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) each
added one goal and one assist and seniors Derick
Smith (New London, N.H.) and Adam
Rothbart (Portland, Maine) and freshmen Shawn
McEvoy (Spring, Texas) and Ty Long
(Dover, N.H.) each tallied single markers. Hadley also
collected a team-high seven ground balls and won all four of his
face-off attempts.
Plymouth State opened up a 3-0 lead over the opening 18 minutes of
play, as a pair of Giroux tallies sandwiched Long's third
goal of the season. Castleton got one back when Samuel Bailey
(Hartford, Vt.) struck for his fourth of the year off a Jake Rick
(Rochester, N.Y.) assist. That was as close as the Spartans would
come, as Plymouth ended the first half on a 4-0 run on a pair of
goals from Eriksen and one each from Smith and Johansmeyer.
Korey Counos (St. Albans, Vt.) scored one minute into the third
period to cut the lead to five, but Plymouth once again answered
with four-straight goals to put the game out of reach.
Rick and Michael Martinez (Barrington, Ill.) each scored once to
round out the Castleton (1-3) scorers. Rick also corralled a
game-high nine ground balls in the loss. David DeGhetto (Clifton,
NJ) stopped nine shots on goal for the Spartans.
Junior Kevin Hayes (Beverly, Mass.) picked up the
win for Plymouth in net, stopping seven shots and backstopping a
Plymouth defense that kept the Spartans at bay for much of the
contest, and forced 44 turnovers.
Castleton opens its North Atlantic Conference (NAC) schedule next
Saturday when the Spartans play host to Johnson State at 1:00 p.m.
Plymouth State will travel to Massachusetts Maritime on Tuesday for
a 4:00 p.m. non-conference tilt in a rematch of last season's
ECAC Tournament game.
