BABSON PARK, Mass. – Freshman Alex Patinkin
(Providence, R.I.) and junior Armand Wilson (Fairfield, Conn.)
combined for five goals and four assists Thursday afternoon as
Babson College defeated Plymouth State University, 11-8, in
non-conference college men's lacrosse action.
Plymouth State led 3-1 in the first period but Babson battle back
to tie the score at 4-4 by halftime. The Beavers outscored
the visitors 4-1 in the third period to go up 8-5 and didn't
let them get closer than two goals in the final stanza to clinch
the victory.
Patinkin finished with two goals and three assists Wilson tallied
three goals and one assist in the win. The Beavers improve their
overall record to 4-3 on the season while the Panthers drop to 2-3.
Babson sophomore Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.) got the scoring
started seven minutes into the first period with an unassisted
goal. Plymouth State then scored the next three goals, including
two from junior Andrew Eriksen (Beverly, Mass.) to
take the 3-1 lead. Freshman Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.) scored
for the Beavers off a pass from junior Tom Cykana (Minnetonka,
Minn.) to bring the score to 3-2 at the end of the first period.
PSU senior Brian Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.)
scored his first goal of the game with 8:15 left in the half to put
the Panthers up 4-2. Wilson scored for Babson off a Patinkin assist
at the 4:32 mark, and the duo struck again just over a minute later
when Wilson assisted Patinkin during a man-down situation to tie
the game 4-4 going into the break.
Babson came out of halftime to score the first two goals of the
third period taking the 6-4 lead. PSU senior Tim
Hadley (New London, N.H.) then chipped in a goal for the
Panthers but Babson's Wilson and Caruso answered back scoring
another two unanswered goals giving the Beavers the 8-5 lead
entering the final stanza.
The Beavers outshot Plymouth 41-22 in the game. Junior goalkeeper
Kevin Hayes (Beverly, Mass.) came up big for
Plymouth State on many occasions playing the full 60 minutes in net
and making 13 total saves. Babson senior goalkeeper Mike Saucier
(Nashua, N.H.) also went the distance in net making four saves.
Giroux led Plymouth State with three goals and was followed by
Eriksen who added two. Seniors Hadley, Steve
Engel (South Windsor, Conn.) and Adam
Rothbart (Portland, Maine) each chipped in with one goal
apiece. Senior Derick Smith (New London, N.H.)
finished with five groundballs.
Babson returns to action next Monday, March 29, when the Beavers
host Tufts University for a 4:00 p.m. game. Plymouth State will
next visit Clark University next Wednesday, March 31, for a 5:00
p.m. contest.
