KEENE, N.H. - Senior Laura Kent
(Bellingham, Mass.) scored 18 of her game-high 22 points at the
free throw line Saturday afternoon as sixth-seeded Plymouth State
University knocked off second-seeded Regis College in the
semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Division III New England Tournament being held at Keene State
College.
The Panthers, 17-10, advance to Sunday's championship game at 1:00
p.m. against top-seeded Keene State, 19-9. The Owls earned
their berth in the title game with a 56-49 victory over
fourth-seeded WPI. PSU also pulled an upset in the first
round on Wednesday with a 70-59 win over third-seeded Endicott
College.
Kent finished with a double-double, adding 12 rebounds to her 22
points. Junior Amanda Kania (Manchester,
N.H./West) added 17 points and seven rebounds, sophomore
Alicia Doucet (Manchester, N.H./Central) finished
with 13 points and nine boards, and senior Kalie
Judd (Peabody, Mass.) contributed 12 points and eight
rebounds.
Sophomore Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Calif.) led the Pride with
12 points after making all four of her three-point attempts.
Three other players finished with nine points, senior Jessica Page
(Quincy, Mass.), sophomore Meagan Tobin (Quincy, Mass.), and junior
Sarah McNult (Hampstead, N.H.), who also collected a game-high 14
rebounds.
Regis controlled the game early on, pulling out to a 10-point lead
midway through the first half. PSU answered with nine
straight points to pull to within a point with nine minutes
remaining. The Panthers took their first lead with 2:31 to
play and finished the half with a one-point advantage, 35-34.
Plymouth State maintained a small lead the first 10 minutes of the
second half, but Regis hung tough and battled back to regain the
lead, 49-48, with 10 minutes to play. Kent made 10 straight free
throws as the Panthers took the lead for good with six minutes to
play and pulled away to the win, and Kania added a three-pointer
and a pair of free throws to help seal the win. The Panthers
dominated the rebounding department by a 53-34 count.
The championship game will be the third meeting this season between
the Panthers and Owls. PSU won the first game in Plymouth in
January, 62-59, and KSC took second game in Keene in February,
66-48.
