BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Teddy
Akriviellis (Dover, Mass.) tallied a career-high eight
points on four goals and four assists Saturday afternoon to lead
the Plymouth State University men's lacrosse team over host
University of Massachusetts Boston, 18-6, in the Little East
Conference regular season finale at the Clark Athletic Center
field.
The Panthers wind up the regular season at 7-7 overall and 4-3 in
LEC play, clinching home-field advantage in the first round of next
week's conference tournament. PSU will host a first-round
game on Tuesday, with the start time and opponent to be
determined. The Beacons finish their season at 4-11 overall
and 0-7 in conference play.
PSU opened the contest with three unanswered goals, courtesy of
Akriviellis just 22 seconds into the game and senior Brian
Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) and junior Andrew
Eriksen (Beverly, Mass.) over the next nine minutes.
Senior Al Craven (Milton, Mass.) put UMass Boston on the board with
1:21 on the clock, but senior Tim Hadley (New
London, N.H.) responded for the visitors just 17 seconds later for
a 4-1 Panthers' lead after one quarter.
Plymouth State struck early in the second quarter as well when
senior Steve Engel (South Windsor, Conn.) won the
faceoff and scored on a helper from senior Matt
Johansmeyer (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) just 33 seconds into
the frame. Senior Brett Zebrowski (Bayville,
N.Y.) and Akriviellis each followed with scores over the next three
minutes to give the Panthers a 7-1 advantage. Senior Dale
Nunn (Hillsborough, N.J.) interrupted the PSU scoring surge with a
goal for the Beacons during a man-up situation, but Akriviellis
closed out the quarter with a pair of goals to give the Panthers a
9-2 margin at the intermission.
The teams traded goals to begin the third quarter with freshman
Ty Long (Dover, N.H.) scoring for PSU and
sophomore Pat Driscoll (Hingham, Mass.) netting his 40th
goal of the season for UMB. The Panthers closed out the quarter
with five consecutive goals for a 15-3 lead before coasting home
the rest of the way.
Junior goalie Kevin Hayes (Beverly, Mass.) stopped
eight of 11 shots through three quarters to earn the victory for
PSU, while classmate Billy Morgan (Winchester,
Mass.) and sophomore Jack Tyo (East Sandwich,
Mass.) split time for the Panthers in the final quarter.
Eriksen finished with three goals and three assists fort PSU, while
Giroux added two assists to his two goals. Engel was a
perfect 12-12 on face-offs, coming up with 14 groundballs and
chipping in with a goal and three assists.
