Z.Jakubas, Ioannides win twice each for Panthers

            HOLDERNESS, N.H.  – Junior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) won her matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles Wednesday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over Colby-Sawyer College in a non-conference match at the Holderness School Courts.

            The team match was very close, with four of the six singles encounters going to three sets. PSU led 2-1 after the doubles round, and each school won a singles match in straight sets to make it 3-2 in favor of Plymouth State. Jakubas pulled out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, but Colby-Sawyer answered with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 comeback win by freshman Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) at No. 2 singles to keep the team score close.

            PSU clinched the team outcome when senior Rosalie DiRado (Gansevoort, N.Y.) came from down a set to earn a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, and junior Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) did the same at No. 5 singles to round out the scoring with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision.

            Zara Jakubas teamed with his sister Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) for an 8-2 victory at No.1 doubles, and Ioannides and sophomore Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.) won by the same score at No. 2.  Colby-Sawyer's win in doubles came at No. 3 by freshman Christine Hill (Wallingford, Conn.) and senior Ellen Graham (Newburyport, Mass.), 8-6.

            PSU is back on the courts Saturday with a non-conference match at Johnson State College.  Colby-Sawyer will participate in the Grass Doubles Tournament hosted by Salve Regina in Newport, Rhode Island on Saturday.
