PSU Women's Lacrosse falls to Chapman (California)

MacDonald, Vonachen, Fistori provide highlights for Panthers

            ORANGE, Calif. – The Plymouth State University women's lacrosse team started its three-game trip to California Monday with an 18-5 loss to Chapman University at Wilson Field.

            Chapman (3-3) led from start to finish, including scoring the game's final eight goals. PSU has alternated wins and losses this spring with Monday's outcome evening its season record at 2-2.

            Senior Amy MacDonald (Hull, Mass.) and sophomore Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) scored two goals apiece to lead the visitors. Senior Rachel Fistori (Medford, Mass.) contributed four draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover, and classmate Molly Gleason (Haverhill, Mass.) added a goal and three draw controls.

            The host school scored a season-high 18 goals including a team-high four goals from sophomore Gretchen Rodenberger, and three apiece from junior Brooke Martini and sophomore Tessa Oliaro. Junior Kylee Moore also scored a goal and added four assists for Chapman.

            Plymouth State trailed by just two goals (4-2) with 11:11 left in the first half when Chapman broke open the game with three consecutive goals. Rodenberger scored two goals in 11 seconds (both on passes from Moore) and Oliaro added a free position goal at 9:58 to give the home Panthers a 7-2 lead. Martini then scored on a free position shot with 26 seconds left to give Chapman a 10-4 halftime lead. Chapman capitalized on 11 fouls within the 8-meter arch, scoring on six free position attempts.

            After MacDonald scored the first goal of the second half for PSU to make it 10-5, Chapman held the visitors scoreless over the final 26:30 of the game and scored eight unanswered goals to close the game.

            Chapman sophomore GK Tara Sonnemaker faced 13 shots and made eight saves (six in the second half) for her third win of the season.

            PSU plays again Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. (PT) at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
