Box Score Curran leads Panthers to first win on California trip
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior goalie Casey Curran (Framingham, Mass.) made a career-high 11 saves and classmate Amy MacDonald (Hull, Mass.) scored three second-half goals Wednesday evening to lead the Plymouth State University women's lacrosse team to a 10-7 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in non-conference ation at Zinda Field.
The Panthers improved to 1-1 on the California trip and 3-2 overall, handing the Athenas their first loss of the season after a 7-0 start.
MacDonald finished with a game-high four goals for PSU while freshman Megan Tingley (Natick, Mass.) tallied two goals, two assists and a team-high four ground balls and senior Molly Gleason (Haverhill, Mass.) added two goals, one assist and a game-high six draw controls.
The Athenas were the first to score as Joanna Heywood put one in the net just under a minute after the opening draw. The Panthers answered back with a 4-1 run including two goals from Tingley to take a 4-2 lead. CMS came back with goals by Mikaela Connell and Ellen Berkley just over a minute apart to tie the score at 4-4 with three minutes to go in the half. It looked as if it was going to go into the half tied until Gleason scored with just eight seconds on the clock to give the Panthers a one-goal lead at the break.
MacDonald and Gleason opened the second half strong, scoring goals within 15 seconds of each other just over two minutes into the half. Katie Hill of CMS mounted her own comeback as she scored two goals. The comeback fell short for the Athenas though as MacDonald and sophomore Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) combined to tally three straight goals for PSU to seal the win.
The PSU defense caused 10 turnovers, including three each by Tingley and sophomore Becky Dale (Keene, N.H.)
The Panthers wrap up their California trip on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. (PT) at Occidental College.
