PSU Women's Tennis tops Colby-Sawyer

Panthers double up Chargers in non-conference action 

            NEW LONDON, N.H. – Plymouth State University won three straight singles matches to break a 2-2 deadlock as the Panthers knocked off Colby-Sawyer College, 6-3, in non-conference women's tennis action at Kelsey Courts on Wednesday afternoon.

            PSU held a 2-1 lead after pairs play, but the hosts evened the match with a win at No. 1 singles. Juniors Kerstin Venincasa (Sutton, Mass.) and Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) earned straight set wins and freshman Hanna Street (New Castle, N.H.) secured the win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6.

            The win pushes the Panthers to 2-1, while Colby-Sawyer drops to 1-3.

            How it Happened.

  • Venincasa and Sundquist put the Panthers ahead with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. After the Chargers evened the score, Street and freshman Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) picked up an 8-2 win to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
  • Colby-Sawyer earned the win at No. 1 singles to tie things at 2-2, but Venincasa, Sundquist and Street ripped off wins to guarantee victory for the Panthers.
  • Venincasa went 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, while Sundquist dispatched of her opponent by a 6-0, 6-3 score at No. 5.
  • The hosts picked up a third point with a win at No. 2.
  • Marshall trailed 4-1 in the first set, but came back to win 7-5, then fought hard for a 6-3 win to claim a point at No. 3.

 

            Inside the Numbers:

  • Venincasa is the lone unbeaten Panther thus far, going 3-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles. Street upped her singles mark to 2-0, while Sundquist improved to 3-0 in pairs' action.
  • Sundquist pushed her career doubles record to a remarkable 27-4, including 14-2 when paired with Venincasa.
  • With her singles win, Venincasa improves to 20-11 in her career. The 20 wins are tied for the 14th most in program history.

 

            Straight from the Coach's Mouth:

             "No. 2 and No. 3 doubles played solidly today to start us off in the match," said head coach Barbara Rawlsky-Willett. "Numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles finished things up for us. It was a good showing for us all around."

  • Plymouth State returns to conference action on Saturday (Sept. 14) with a road match at Salem State. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
