Dolcimascolo nets hat trick, four points in first career game 

            BIDDEFORD, Maine – Freshman Jake Dolcimascolo (Georgetown, Mass.) scored three goals and added an assist in his first collegiate game, but the University of New England scored the game's first four goals on the way to a 13-8 win over Plymouth State University in a non-conference men's lacrosse game at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Saturday.

            The Nor'Easters built a 4-0 lead before PSU got on the board late in the second quarter for a 4-1 deficit at the half. Dolcimascolo notched his first of the game early in the third, but UNE followed with a 5-1 spurt to push the lead to 9-3. PSU trimmed the margin to three, 9-6, early in the final period, but UNE was able to hold on for the win.

            Plymouth State drops its season opener to fall to 0-1, while UNE improves to 3-0.

            How it Happened.

  • Senior Noah Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) scored twice in the first six minutes and UNE went ahead 3-0 midway through the opening period.
  • The hosts pushed the lead to 4-0 with four minutes before the half before senior Charlie Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) tallied the Panthers' first goal of the year.
  • Dolcimascolo scored 39 seconds into the third to trim the margin to 4-2, but the Nor'Easters answered with a 5-1 spurt before junior Connor Delea's (Manchester, N.H.) man-up goal pulled PSU to within 9-4 heading into the fourth.
  • Dolcimascolo and freshman Nick Drew (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored in the first three minutes of the final stanza to cut the margin to 9-6, but UNE used a 4-1 run to put the game out of reach.
  • Dolcimascolo completed the hat trick in the final seconds.

 

            Inside the Numbers:

  • Dolcimascolo finished with three goals and an assist, while Delea scored twice.
  • Harrington had a solid afternoon with a game-high six caused turnovers and team-best six ground balls to go with his goal.
  • Sophomore Mike Donnelly (New Hampton, N.H.) added six ground balls.
  • Junior Robert Porter (Groveland, Mass.) made 13 saves but fell to 0-1, while UNE senior Sam MacKenzie (Worthington, Ohio) stopped nine shots to improve to 3-0.
  • UNE held a 42-33 lead in shots and each team scooped up 34 ground balls.
