Holly Temple (Topsham, Maine) converted a penalty stroke opportunity in the third quarter and senior
Jess Mezquita (Atkinson, N.H.) also scored to help Plymouth State University to a 2-1 win over Salem State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey matchup at Panther Field on Tuesday night.
The Vikings got on the board first just under three minutes into the contest, but Plymouth State took over and never looked back. Sophomore
Taylor Healey (Campton, N.H.) came streaking through the middle and split two defenders. Her shot was deflected by the Vikings' goalkeeper, but the rebound went right to Mezquita, who buried it into the back of the cage to tie the game at one.
Plymouth State's offense came alive in the second quarter as it fired ten shots on the Vikings' goal. The efforts were rewarded in the third quarter when PSU was awarded a penalty stroke and Temple blasted by the Salem State goalkeeper to give the Panthers the 2-1 lead and the hosts would hold on for the win.
Plymouth State improves to 7-4 (5-3 LEC), while Salem State drops to 6-6 (4-4 LEC).

How it Happened:
- Salem State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just under three minutes into the contest.
- Sophomore Kayla Antonucci (Windham, N.H.) made a diving stop to keep the deficit at one.
- Just past the midway point of the second quarter the momentum shifted. Healey beat two Salem State defenders and fired a shot at the cage. The rebound found Mezquita, who tied the game.
- The Panthers' offense fired ten shots on cage in the second, but the first half ended in a 1-1 tie.
- The third quarter went back-and-forth, and the Panthers broke through on Temple's penalty stroke to take a 2-1 lead.
- The PSU defense took over in the fourth quarter, turning away all five Salem State corners to hold on for the victory.
