FH: Worcester State rallies past Panthers despite Perry’s two-goal game

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Natalie Perry (Conway, N.H.) scored twice and sophomore Kayla Antonucci (Windham, N.H.) made seven saves, but Worcester State University rallied from a 2-1 deficit for a 4-2 win over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey game at Panther Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers opened the scoring on Perry's first goal of the game on a penalty stroke, but five minutes later the Lancers evened the score off a penalty corner and the game went into halftime tied at one.

Sophomore Taylor Healey (Campton, N.H.) carried the ball near the Worcester State goal and found Perry alone in front, who deposited her second goal of the afternoon to give PSU a 2-1 lead, but the Lancers came back to tie it five minutes later. The visitors tacked on a pair of goals in the fourth quarter to sneak away with the win.

Prior to the game Plymouth State honored its senior class in a brief on-field ceremony; Perry, Jess Mezquita (Atkinson, N.H.), Olivia Geisser (Lowell, Mass.) and Mariah Luscher (Holderness, N.H.).

Plymouth State drops to 7-5 (5-4 LEC), while the Lancers improve to 11-4 and 6-2 in conference play.

Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • Healey had a great chance early when she broke in alone, but the Worcester State goalkeeper was equal to the task. Both teams went back-and-forth throughout the opening quarter, but the game remained scoreless after one.
  • PSU kept the pressure on, and the Panthers were awarded a penalty stroke five minutes into the second that Perry converted for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Lancers drew the game even off a penalty corner with a shot with just over four minutes left in the half.
  • Early in the third quarter WSU broke through the Panthers' defense and rushed in alone, but Antonucci got enough of the shot to send it wide.
  • Healey found herself with room in the circle and slid a pass to Perry, who blasted home her second of the night to put PSU ahead, 2-1, with six minutes left in the third.
  • Worcester State evened the score with just six seconds left in the frame to knot the game at 2-2 heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • Just under two minutes into the fourth quarter Worcester State pulled ahead and two minutes later the Lancers would take a two-goal lead before holding on for the win.
By the Numbers:
  • Worcester State held an 11-7 edge in shots on goal and a 17-5 advantage in penalty corners.
  • With her two tallies Perry now leads the team with six goals, five assists and 17 points. The day marked her second two-goal game of the season.
  • Healey is tied for second on the team with four assists.
