PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore
Athena Comeau (Rutland, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and classmate
Kayla Antonucci (Windham, N.H.) made nine saves, but it wasn't enough as Westfield State University snuck past Plymouth State University, 3-2, in overtime in a Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey contest at Panther Field on Saturday afternoon.
Westfield State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter and stayed in front until halftime. Early in the second quarter Comeau tipped in a shot from sophomore
Taylor Healey (Campton, N.H.) and the Panthers were on the board. Momentum continued to build for PSU, as Antonucci and the Panthers' defense kept the game close.
Comeau scored her second of the game later in the third quarter after sophomore
Holly Temple (Topsham, Maine) fired a hard pass to a streaking Healey, who walked in and found Comeau at the far post to tie the game at 2-2.
The score held through the end of regulation to set up a dramatic overtime session. Westfield State was able to gain possession and had multiple point blank opportunities stopped by Antonucci, but an ensuing penalty corner for the Owls led to the game winner.
Plymouth State drops to 6-4 (4-3 LEC), while Westfield State improves to 5-7 (4-2 LEC).

How it Happened:
- The Panthers held a territorial advantage early but couldn't break through the Owls' defense. Westfield State pressured midway through the first quarter but a diving stop by Antonucci kept them off the board.
- The Owls broke the scoreless battle with under five minutes to go in the first when senior Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) found the back of the cage.
- With nearly a minute remaining in the first the Owls scored again after Antonucci made an initial save and the visitors held a 2-0 advantage.
- Comeau found the back of the cage early in the second off a deflection from a Healey shot to get the Panthers on the board.
- PSU tied the game just 1:14 into the third quarter. Temple sent a beautiful pass to a streaking Healey, who walked in and found Comeau at the post to tie the game at 2-2.
- Both teams traded chances throughout the fourth quarter, but regulation ended in a tie.
- Healey came streaking through the Westfield State defense early in the overtime, but her shot sailed wide.
- After an amazing defensive effort by Antonucci, Westfield State earned a penalty corner and senior Shannon Roycroft (Barnstable, Mass.) sent the Owls home with the win.
