CASTLETON, Vt. – Plymouth State University relied on a pair of home runs to earn a split with Castleton University in a double header at Spartan Fields on Tuesday.
The Panthers hit two homers to left field and sophomore
Richie Marique (Derry, N.H.) was fantastic out of the pen as PSU earned a 4-3 win in a Little East Conference (LEC) contest in game one. Castleton salvaged the split with a four-run eighth inning to take game two, a non-conference clash, 9-8.
Plymouth State ends the day at 6-7 (2-5 LEC), while the Spartans move to 9-13 (6-6 LEC).
The Basics:
- Game 1: Plymouth State 4, Castleton 3
- Game 2: Plymouth State 8, Castleton 9
- Plymouth State (6-7, 2-5 LEC)
- Castleton (9-13, 6-6 LEC)
How it Happened (Game One):
- Graduate student James Salta (Laconia, N.H.) gave the Panthers an early lead when he blasted a majestic home run to deep left field with two down in the first.
- Salta came through with another clutch two-out hit in the third. Senior Joe Routhier (Nashua, N.H.) walked to open the inning and was sacrificed to second. After the second out, Salta ripped a single through the left side to make it 2-0.
- Castleton got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to cut the deficit in half.
- The Spartans threatened in the fourth as the first two batters reached, but sophomore Ryan Hurlbert (Middletown, Conn.) worked out of the jam and the Panthers' bats quickly made Castleton pay the next half inning.
- Marique poked a seeing-eye up the middle to open the frame and classmate Alex Rives (Gilford, N.H.) followed with a two-run shot to left to extend the lead to 4-1.
- The hosts rallied in the bottom of the seventh when a two-run laser just cleared the fence in left centerfield to make it a 4-3 game. The Spartans got the tying and go-ahead runs into scoring position with two down, but Marique came on to get a huge strikeout to preserve the lead.
- Castleton put the tying run on in the eighth with a two-out infield hit, but Marique induced a tapper back to the mound for the third out, then set down the side in order in the ninth to pick up the save.
By the Numbers (Game One):
- Salta had the lone multi-hit game for the Panthers, finishing 2-for-4 with a homer, run scored and two RBI.
- Rives' dinger and sophomore Griffin Crane's (Lancaster, N.H.) double were PSU's other extra base hits.
- Hurlbert improved to 3-0 after going 5.1 innings and allowing just four hits and an earned run. He walked three. Marique picked up his first save of the season giving up just a hit and needing only 23 pitches to go the final 2.1 innings. He struck out two.
How it Happened (Game Two):
- Plymouth State put a three-spot on the board in the fourth when Rives knocked in a run with a bases loaded fielder's choice. Senior Peter Laviolette (Longboat Key, Fla.) followed with a two-run triple to right field to make it 3-0.
- Castleton came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
- Graduate student Andrew Salta (Laconia, N.H.) ripped a two-out double down the leftfield line to score a run in the fifth as PSU extended the lead.
- PSU walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth and an RBI single and two-run throwing error put the Spartans in the lead, 5-4.
- Crane tied the game in the seventh on a run-scoring single.
- PSU pulled in front with three runs in the top of the eighth. Junior Drew Metzdorf (Burlington, Mass.) drove in a run with a double to right, Crane was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and A. Salta worked a walk to force in another run as the Panthers went up, 8-5.
- Castleton used five hits and a pair of PSU errors to rally for four runs in the bottom of the inning and the Panthers were unable to mount a comeback in the ninth.
By the Numbers (Game Two):
- Metzdorf, Crane and Laviolette all had two hits, while Crane, Laviolette and A. Salta each drove in two.
- A. Salta reached base four times with a double and three walks.
- Graduate student Mark Levesque (Milton, N.H.) worked the first three innings for the Panthers. Rives suffered the loss, throwing one inning while giving up four runs (three earned).
