FH: Antonucci shines in setback against Colby-Sawyer

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Kayla Antonucci (Windham, N.H.) had 11 saves, but it wasn't enough as Colby-Sawyer College slipped by Plymouth State University, 4-2, in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Panther Field on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's contest kicked off PSU's first full season on its new turf field, and the first time the Panther field hockey team has played on campus in seven years. This game would also serve as the field hockey team's Childhood Cancer Awareness game. PSU sold merchandise and accepted donations to support the Dana Farber Research Center for Pediatric Cancers.

Colby-Sawyer would strike first on a goal from junior Aoife Daly (Harwich, Mass.), but the Panthers answered back with goals from sophomore Sydney Spenard (Manchester, N.H.) and junior Alessia Salzillo (Saugus, Mass.). The lead wouldn't last long as Colby-Sawyer tacked on three more goals to edge the Panthers by a score of 4-2.

Plymouth State starts its season at 0-1, while Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-0.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 2, Colby-Sawyer 4
    • Plymouth State (0-1)
    • Colby-Sawyer (2-0)
Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • Colby-Sawyer took the lead midway through the first quarter, but Spenard answered in the final seconds of the frame to even the score.
  • Senior Natalie Perry (Conway, N.H.) sent a drive from the right side that Spenard redirected into the goal with 9 seconds left in the quarter to square the game.
  • Salzillo gave the Panthers the lead when she caught the Colby-Sawyer goalkeeper out of position and fired a long shot from the left side three minutes into the second quarter.
  • Colby-Sawyer rallied to tie the game 2-2 less than two minutes later and the game would remain tied at the half.
  • Colby-Sawyer regained the lead in the third quarter when Daly collected her third goal of the contest.
  • The Chargers kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter. Antonucci made a series of amazing saves, but Colby-Sawyer would capitalize on a penalty stroke to account for the final score.
  • Plymouth State pressured Colby-Sawyer late in the game but couldn't cut into the deficit.
By the Numbers:
  • Antonucci's 11 saves were easily a career high and matched the most for a PSU goalie since Sept. 8, 2018.
  • Senior Jess Mezquita (Atkinson, N.H.) and Spenard would finish with three shots on net apiece for the Panthers.
  • Colby-Sawyer held an 18-12 shot advantage for the game and would double up the Panthers with a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.
