BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior
Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) shattered his career high with an incredible 49 saves, but #7 Babson rallied from a 2-1, third-period deficit to top Plymouth State University, 3-2, in overtime in non-conference men's ice hockey at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday evening.
Babson came out firing, but Brawley kept the Beavers off the scoreboard for the first 36 minutes of action. PSU got on the board first on a tally from sophomore
Anton Jellvik (Taby, Sweden) at the 8:35 mark of the second period.
The hosts pulled even with 3:44 left in the middle frame, but sophomore
Carson Lanceleve (Stewiacke, Nova Scotia) restored the advantage with his first career goal early in the third period. Again Babson answered, tying the game at the 5:55 mark and the score remained deadlocked through the end of regulation.
Playing a second straight overtime contest to open the year, PSU was whistled for a penalty midway through the overtime and Babson took advantage with a power play game-winner with 1:13 remaining in the extra session.
Plymouth State moves to 0-1-1, while the Beavers go to 1-0-0.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 2, Babson 3 (OT)
- Plymouth State (0-1-1)
- Babson (1-0-0)
How it Happened:
- After a scoreless first period, PSU got on the board near the midpoint of the middle stanza. Sophomore Ethan Stuckless (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland) stole the puck along the boards in the Babson zone and sent a feed to Jellvik in the slot, who slipped a shot inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.
- Babson evened the score with 3:44 remaining in the period to tie the game heading into the second intermission.
- The hosts looked to pull in front early in the third period during a man-advantage, but a Beavers' shot hit the post and less than a minute later a Babson turnover in the zone led to Lanceleve's shorthanded tally to put the Panthers back in front, 2-1.
- Babson came back to tie the score just 3:30 later and the score would remain deadlocked into overtime.
- In the extra session a PSU penalty gave the hosts a fifth power play and the Beavers capitalized on a shot to the top right corner at the 3:47 mark.
By the Numbers:
- Brawley easily topped his previous career high of 39 saves, finishing the night with 49 stops. It was the most saves for a Panthers' netminder since Gordon Ceasar turned aside 66 shots in December 2014.
- Jellvik scored for the second straight game, while Stuckless had three assists on the weekend.
- Lanceleve's tally was the first of his collegiate career.
- PSU has gone 1-6-1 against the Beavers, though recent games have been incredibly tight. After skating to a 2-2 tie in the 2014-15 season, Babson has won the last five meetings by a total of six goals.
