PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University moved into a three-way tie for the top spot in the Little East Conference (LEC) on Saturday after the Panthers earned a 3-0 (25-20, 31-29, 25-20) win over Western Connecticut State University in women's volleyball action at Foley Gymnasium on Homecoming Saturday.
Junior
Ryley McNeeley (Easton, Mass.) led all players with 10 kills, while classmate
Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) had six blocks in an impressive win. PSU built an early lead, then held the Wolves at arm's length to take the opening set, then fought off three set points to outlast WestConn in set two. Plymouth State used a five-point run midway through the third set to complete the sweep for the key conference win.
Plymouth State improves to 13-3 and 4-1 LEC, moving into a tie with WestConn (9-8, 4-1 LEC) and Eastern Connecticut (11-3, 4-1 LEC) atop the conference standings.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 3, WestConn 0
- Plymouth State (13-3, 4-1 LEC)
- WestConn (9-8, 4-1 LEC)
How it Happened:
- Senior Emilee Flanagan (Milton, N.H.) had a pair of booming kills as Plymouth State got off to a quick start, leading 9-3. Ryan's smash kept the Panthers in front, 14-11, but WestConn ripped off a 5-1 run to take the lead. PSU recovered as Flanagan notched another kill and sophomore Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) ran off three straight aces for a 20-16 advantage, and PSU would wrap up the win, 25-20.
- Set two saw tremendous back-and-forth action with 16 ties and 11 lead changes. The Panthers seemed to have things well in hand after sophomore Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) served PSU to a 15-10 lead, but the Wolves answered to knot things at 15-15. WestConn pulled ahead, 22-19, but back-to-back errors and a kill from sophomore Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) pulled the hosts even again. WestConn had three chances to pull out the win, but each time the Panthers responded. Ryan and Sanderson teamed up for a block to tie things at 29-apiece, and consecutive WestConn errors gave PSU a 2-0 lead.
- Ryan had a pair of aces and Sanderson's kill gave Plymouth State a 15-8 lead in set three and the Panthers maintained the advantage the rest of the way. WestConn pulled to within two at 21-19, but Flanagan's kill erased any chance of a comeback before McNeeley closed out the match with a winner.
By the Numbers:
- McNeeley finished with ten kills while hitting .467 and senior Natalie Gravelle (Portsmouth, N.H.) added nine kills (.350 attack pct.).
- Flanagan posted eight kills and three blocks, while Ryan stuffed the box score with five kills, six blocks and two aces.
- Freshman Kalista Butler (Philipsburg, Pa.) recorded 20 assists, with classmate Riley McDonough (Gilford, N.H.) adding 12 to go with seven digs.
- Stogner led the way defensively with a match-best 15 digs, while Marucci added 14 and sophomore Imalay Rodriguez Martinez (Juncos, Puerto Rico) chipping in with nine.
- Plymouth State has won eight-of-nine meetings, though WestConn leads the all-time series (25-19).
