20221112 - WH vs. Norwich

Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

WH: Julian makes 33 saves in setback to #9 Norwich

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) turned aside 33 shots, but #9 Norwich used a three-goal second period to top Plymouth State University, 5-1, in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Saturday afternoon.

Norwich pulled ahead 14 minutes into the contest, but senior Addie Swanson (Eagle River, Alaska) potted the equalizer just over three minutes later as the game remained deadlocked at 1-1 into the first intermission.

The score remained the same through the first half of the middle stanza until the Cadets pulled ahead with three goals in a five-minute span.

PSU continued to apply pressure but was unable to get any additional shots past the Norwich goaltender and the Cadets added an insurance tally early in the third to account for the final score.

Plymouth State slips to 2-4-0 (1-1-0 NEHC), while Norwich remains unbeaten at 4-0-0 and 3-0-0 in league play.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, #9 Norwich 5
    • Plymouth State (2-4-0, 1-1-0 NEHC)
    • #9 Norwich (4-0-0, 3-0-0 NEHC)
How it Happened:
  • Julian made a pair of big saves at the nine minute mark, sprawling for a glove stop before denying the rebound chance from her back.
  • The Cadets got on the board first at 13:56 when a wrist shot from the right circle found its way to the top right corner.
  • Swanson pulled the Panthers even at 17:19. Junior Isabella Borbridge (Calgary, Alberta) had her shot deflect off a Cadets' skate and Swanson was there to clean up the rebound to tie the game at 1-1 during a Plymouth State power play.
  • Plymouth State nearly pulled ahead at the midpoint of the second, but a close range shot off the stick of junior Carsen Moffett (Kamloops, British Columbia) hit the iron.
  • Norwich pulled ahead just 15 seconds later on a perfect pass to the weakside to make it 2-1 at the 10:16 mark of the second.
  • The Cadets doubled the lead when a Norwich pass from behind the PSU goal found a skater alone in the high slot and her shot snuck in the left side post at 14:29.
  • Norwich added another tally just 79 seconds later when a wrist shot from the top of the circle found its way through traffic and passed the screened Julian.
  • The visitors added an insurance goal 1:31 into the third on a low-angle shot and Plymouth State was unable to answer.
By the Numbers:
  • Borbridge and senior Chantelle Ross (Ottawa, Ontario) had the assists on Swanson's tally.
  • Swanson's goal was her second of the season and 11th of her career.
  • PSU was 1-for-1 on the power play, while holding the Cadets' scoreless in their lone chance.
  • Plymouth State blocked 26 shots, with sophomores Emily DeSimone (Walpole, Mass.) and Brenna Smith (Medfield, Mass.) posting five apiece.
  • Julian's 33 saves were a season high and the second time she's eclipsed the 30-save threshold this year.

Up Next:
  • PSU visits Salem State on Friday (Nov. 18) for another NEHC contest. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
