WH: Salem State rallies past Panthers

SALEM, Mass. – Senior Meghan Hamilton (Walpole, Mass.) tallied her team-leading third goal of the season, but Salem State rallied past Plymouth State University, 2-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey action at Rockett Arena on Friday night.

Hamilton gave the Panthers a first period lead and the lead held until the late stages of the middle stanza. Salem State pulled even with less than three minutes remaining in the second, then potted the game-winner early in the third and the Vikings were able to hold on to the narrow lead the rest of the way.

Plymouth State slips to 2-5-0 (1-2-0 NEHC), while Salem State improves to 1-3-1 and 1-3-1 in conference play.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, Salem State 2
    • Plymouth State (2-5-0, 1-2-0 NEHC)
    • Salem State (1-3-1, 1-3-1 NEHC)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State struck first with a power play goal late in the first period. Senior Addie Swanson (Eagle River, Alaska) won an offensive zone faceoff to classmate Chantelle Ross (Ottawa, Ontario) along the sidewall. Ross flipped the puck cross ice to sophomore Emily DeSimone (Walpole, Mass.), who found Hamilton alone in the slot and her one-timer beat the Salem State goalie low to the glove side.
  • The lead held until the closing minutes of the second period, when a Salem State skater collected the puck deep in the defensive zone, carried it up the left side past the defense and snuck a shot to the bottom right corner to tie the game.
  • The Vikings took the lead at the 3:47 mark of the third period after taking advantage of a misplayed puck in front of the PSU goal to pull ahead.
  • Plymouth State increased the offensive pressure, and the Panthers had several near misses during a power play midway through the frame. Ross had a wrist shot from the high slot paddled away and Swanson's redirect went just wide. Moments later DeSimone carved through traffic for a close-range shot, but the Vikings' goaltender was able to absorb the puck.
  • The Panthers pulled the goalie for an extra skater over the final 1:21 and DeSimone had a late chance on a low angle shot from the nearside, but Salem State was able to hold on for the win.
By the Numbers:
  • Hamilton's tally was her team-leading third of the season.
  • DeSimone leads the Panthers with four assists and five points on the year, while Ross picked up her second assist.
  • PSU finished 1-of-5 on the power play, while the Vikings were scoreless in four chances.
  • Both teams fired 28 shots on goal.
  • Swanson controlled the faceoff dot, winning 12-of-16 draws.
  • Freshman Maggie Vance (Woodbury, Minn.) made 26 saves in her collegiate debut.
  • Plymouth State moves to 5-4-2 all-time against the Vikings. Four of the past eight meetings have gone to overtime.

Up Next:
  • The Panthers are back on the road tomorrow (Nov. 19) for a 3:00 p.m. tilt at Southern Maine.
