UTICA, N.Y. – It was an afternoon of historical feats for the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team on Sunday as freshman
Payton Schaly (Orillia, Ontario) potted his first career goal to hand head coach
Craig Russell his 200th career victory as the Panthers topped Trine University, 1-0, to close out the Delta by Marriott Thanksgiving Showcase at Adirondack Bank Center.
Schaly potted the game's only goal midway through the second period and senior
Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) made it hold up with a 38-save effort for his third career shutout.
Plymouth State improves to 5-3-1 on the year, while Trine goes to 4-5-1.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 1, Trine 0
- Plymouth State (5-3-1)
- Trine (4-5-1)
How it Happened:
- Both teams brought offensive pressure throughout the first period, but neither was able to solve the opposing goaltender. The Panthers fired 10 shots on target during the frame, while Brawley made 13 stops to keep the game scoreless.
- PSU had an early power play chance in the second period but was unable to convert. Meanwhile, the Panthers' penalty kill unit extended its strong play holding the Thunder scoreless on two first period opportunities and three times in the middle stanza.
- Schaly lit the lamp for his first career goal at the 12:02 mark of the second, with freshman Will Redick (Collingwood, Ohio) and sophomore Connor Tait (Boyds, Md.) setting him up for what proved to be the game winner.
- Trine outshot the Panthers by a 17-7 margin following the Schaly goal, but Brawley and the PSU defense were spectacular to preserve the win.
By the Numbers:
- Senior Niks Krollis (Riga, Latvia), junior Carson Lanceleve (Stewiacke, Nova Scotia) and sophomore Ethan Stuckless (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland) fired a team-high three shots apiece.
- Lanceleve was held without a point for the first time this season, snapping his eight-game points streak.
- The Thunder held a 38-25 advantage in shots.
- PSU's penalty kill unit was perfect, holding Trine scoreless in five power play chances. The Panthers were 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.
- Over its last five games, Plymouth State has allowed just one power play goal in 25 power play chances.
- Now in his 13th season as head coach, Russell improves to 200-86-28 (.682) in his career. He sits just eight wins behind the program's all-time wins leader Dave Webster, who piloted the program for a 20-year stretch from 1976-1996.
- Trine has performed well in five games against nationally ranked opponents this season. The Thunder lost 4-3 and 5-3 to #12 Aurora at the beginning of the month, split with #5 Adrian last weekend with the setback coming in overtime, and skating to a tie with #4 Utica on Saturday.
- This was the first meeting between the two schools.
