VB: Panthers’ streak snapped at Keene State

KEENE, N.H. – Sophomore Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) smashed a match-high 11 kills and added three aces, but Keene State College snapped Plymouth State University's seven-match winning streak with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-21) win over the Panthers in a Little East Conference women's volleyball match at Spaulding Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Despite a late charge, the Panthers were unable to rebound from an early deficit as Keene State took the opening set, 25-21. The Owls used another strong start to build a lead in set two. Once again PSU rallied, cutting the margin to 24-23, but the hosts got a kill to take the set and build a 2-0 lead. It was the Panthers who went out in front to start the third set, but Keene rallied to tie things at the midpoint of the set. The Owls pulled in front and maintained a slight lead the rest of the way to complete the sweep.

Plymouth State slips to 9-3 and 2-1 in the LEC, while the Owls improve to 3-10 and 1-1 in conference play.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, Keene State 3
    • Plymouth State (9-3, 2-1 LEC)
    • Keene State (3-10, 1-1 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Keene raced out to a 5-1 lead, but the Panthers made it a one-point game, 8-7, after Stogner's kill. The home team used a 7-0 spurt to take a 19-9 lead, but junior Ryley McNeeley (Easton, Mass.) had a big kill to start a PSU rally. The Panthers chipped away, using a Keene error to jumpstart a long service run from junior Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.). Ryan's ace trimmed the margin to 23-21 but following a KSC timeout the hosts ran off two straight for the 25-21 win.
  • The Owls scored the first five points of set two, but Stogner's ace made it a one-point game at 8-7. Keene State recovered to expand its lead to 19-13, but once again the Panthers clawed back. Senior Natalie Gravelle (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Ryan teamed up for a block to pull PSU to within 22-20, and moments later Stogner's kill made it a 24-23 game, but the hosts got a kill to hold off the threat to win 25-23 and seize the 2-0 lead.
  • It was Plymouth State that got off to the good start in the third set, as Stogner had a pair of aces on the way to a 5-1 advantage. Senior Emilee Flanagan (Milton, N.H.) notched a kill for a 10-8 lead, but the Owls answered with a 10-4 spurt for an 18-14 lead and PSU was unable to recover.
By the Numbers:
  • Stogner's 11 kills were a match high, while she chipped in three aces and five digs.
  • Ryan and Flanagan added six and five kills, respectively. Each added a pair of blocks, while Ryan added three aces.
  • Freshmen Kalista Butler (Philipsburg, Pa.) and Riley McDonough (Gilford, N.H.) split the setting duties, combining for 28 assists.
  • Sophomore Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) led the defense with 12 digs, while sophomore Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) chipped in with nine.
  • PSU's offense was unable to get on track as the Panthers hit .071 to Keene State's .223.

Up Next:
  • PSU stays in LEC play on Saturday (Oct. 1) when the Panthers head to Rhode Island College for a noon battle with the Anchorwomen.
