WBB: Second half surge lifts UMB past Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – After a defensive-minded first half, Plymouth State University held a 20-19 lead over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston, but the Beacons shot nearly 50% from the floor in the second half to top the Panthers, 55-35, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
 
Junior Lauren Keller (Fort Morgan, Colo.) nailed a jumper to give the Panthers a 12-4 lead with 3:09 left in the opening quarter, but the Beacons scored the final six points of the frame to make it a two-point game after one.
 
UMB pulled ahead late in the second quarter, but a bucket by junior Sabrina Vlahovic (New Hope, Pa.) and free throw from senior Autumn Nelson (Weare, N.H.) gave PSU a 20-19 halftime edge.
 
The Beacons used a 13-6 surge over the final six minutes of the third to take a 36-29 lead into the final quarter and PSU was unable to rally in the fourth.
 
Plymouth State celebrated Local Youth Basketball Day, with area youth basketball players grades K-8 participating in halftime contests for prizes.
 
The Panthers dip to 4-8 (0-6 LEC), while UMass Boston improves to 8-7 and 1-4 in conference play.

How it Happened:
  • The Beacons scored on their opening possession, but Plymouth State took the lead on a triple by freshman Sophie George (Meredith, N.H.) with 7:08 left in the quarter.
  • George's three-ball ignited the PSU offense as the home team used a 9-2 run to build a 12-4 lead. Senior Sarah Sweet (Narragansett, R.I.) drilled a three during the stretch, with Keller capping the run with a jumper.
  • UMass Boston chipped away over the next three minutes to pull within 12-10 at the end of the quarter.
  • Keller got to the basket and George's free throw pushed the lead to 15-10 after the opening two minutes of the second, but UMB used a 9-2 spurt to pull ahead with 2:32 to go before halftime.
  • Vlahovic tied the game and Nelson's free throw gave the hosts a one-point edge, 20-19, heading to the locker room.
  • The teams went back-and-forth over the first four minutes of the second, with PSU maintaining a slight edge until UMB tied the game at 26-26 with 3:43 remaining. The visitors closed out the quarter with a 10-3 run to grab a 36-29 advantage heading into the fourth.
  • The Beacons pushed the lead to double figures early in the fourth and PSU was unable to cut into the deficit down the stretch.
By the Numbers:
  • Keller led the Panthers with nine points and seven rebounds, while George and Vlahovic added eight points apiece.
  • Vlahovic, Nelson, and senior Jalen Cook (Monkton, Vt.) each pulled down six rebounds.
  • UMass Boston controlled the boards, outrebounding the Panthers by a 56-40 margin.
  • Plymouth State recorded assists on half of the team's field goals.
  • PSU owns the all-time series (40-30), though the Beacons have won each of the last ten meetings.
 
Up Next:
  • The Panthers are home again on Wednesday (Jan. 11) for a 5:30 p.m. clash with Castleton in another LEC contest.
