PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior
Sarah Asciutto (Manchester Center, Vt.) and junior
Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) put up stellar performances to boost Plymouth State University over the University of Southern Maine, 8-1, in Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis action during a Senior Day match in the Bank of New Hampshire Field House at ALLWell North on Tuesday.
Cardoso opened up the day alongside sophomore
Alyssa Craigie (Gilford, N.H.) in No. 1 doubles and putting up the first point in an 8-2 win. Cardoso carried her momentum into her singles match, where she defeated her opponent, 6-0, 6-1.
Asciutto won No. 3 doubles with junior
Amelia Brown (Meredith, N.H.) by an 8-1 score to help the Panthers sweep the doubles matches. Asciutto followed by winning No. 4 singles in a 6-1, 6-0 decision.
Plymouth State jumps to 5-4 (3-3 LEC), while Southern Maine slips to 1-8 (1-6 LEC).
Prior to the match the team recognized its seniors; Ascuitto and
Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.).

How it Happened:
- Craigie and Cardoso jumpstarted the Panthers in No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 victory, before Puzio and junior Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) at No. 2 and Ascuitto and Brown at No. 3 snagged the final two doubles patches with a pair of 8-1 wins to give the team an early 3-0 lead.
- After the Huskies picked up their lone win at No. 1 singles, Craigie swept the first set at No. 2 and shut down a push for a third set with a 7-5 result to earn the win.
- Cardoso and Asciutto nabbed a pair of 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to balloon the Panthers' lead to 6-1.
- Puzio and Brown finalized the score with their own singles wins. Puzio took a 6-4, 6-2 win, and Brown capped it off with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 result.
By the Numbers:
- The pairings of Puzio and LaBarre, and Ascuitto and Brown are each 3-1 in doubles play.
- Brown's record in singles action moves to 5-1, while Puzio still holds the most wins with a record of 6-3.
