PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's soccer team fell to the Keene State College Owls, 2-1, in a Little East Conference (LEC) match on Arold Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers found themselves down 1-0 at halftime, but a second half resurgence gave the Panthers all the momentum to manifest a full comeback attempt. Sophomore
Molly Bellmore (Hebron, Conn.) tied the game at 1-1 in the 60th minute after burying a rebound off the post. The Panthers continued to put on the pressure, recording all 11 team shots in the second frame.
It was not to be in the end, as an Owl corner kick was headed home with six minutes to play to seal the 2-1 victory for Keene State.
Freshman goalkeeper
Drea Oswell (Stafford Springs, Conn.) recorded seven saves in the losing effort.
Plymouth State falls to 3-7-2 (1-5-0 LEC), as Keene State improves to 7-2-4 (3-0-3 LEC) on the season.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 1, Keene State 2
- Plymouth State (3-7-2, 1-5-0 LEC)
- Keene State (7-2-4, 3-0-3 LEC)
How it Happened:
- Keene State opened the scoring in the 40th minute to go up 1-0 in what was otherwise an uneventful first half.
- Plymouth State started the second on its front foot, pinning the Owls into their own half for most of the run of play.
- The pressure paid off, as sophomore Tindra Bergstrand (Taby, Sweden) dribbled past her defender and ripped a shot that bounced off the far post and back out in front of goal. Bellmore took advantage of the moment, getting first to the rebound and scoring the Panthers only goal to tie the game a one-a-piece.
- The Panthers created multiple opportunities to take the lead as the clock continued to wind down in the 1-1 deadlock.
- Against the run of play, a long clearance played up the field led to an Owl corner kick. The kick found the head of a rising midfielder to knock in the winning goal with less than six minutes to play.
- Plymouth State threw numbers forward, attempting to earn themselves a point, but the late Owl goal did not leave enough time for the Panthers to come back for a second time in the end.
By the Numbers:
- Keene State outshot the Panthers 14-11 in the contest.
- The Panthers recorded all eleven of their shots in the second half.
